Today I voiced my opposition to CA's #AB2098, which could lead to doctors facing disciplinary action if accused of spreading covid mis/disinformation. As I discuss here, repeatedly what was considered misinformation has turned out to be true. This bill is a threat to all of us🧵
I think it must require a lot of hubris to write a bill, which suggests a small group of doctors can always know the truth (1984's Ministry of Truth?) In fact, I discussed 1 example of a scientific statement in the actual bill text that was misleading.
Medicine requires humility.
I'm a person who ardently tries not to take sides because I believe in my heart of hearts we are all in this together, but
1. this bill has a very accusatory tone, suggesting there are many physicians who are intentionally trying to harm &
2. The room today felt like a 2 tiered society where the doctors (many in masks) were in opposition to "the people" who opposed the bill. I don't believe there were any other doctors opposing the bill besides me
This was indicative of the atmosphere 😬
If physicians don't serve the people, who do they serve?

And if physicians are hesitant to say what they truly believe for fear of being disciplined for spreading "misinformation," the public will lose trust in doctors & scientific inquiry will be stifled
Thankfully, I had @_Iaura_ on my side. I knew I liked her when she jokingly asked me why I didn't wear a stethoscope 😁
There have been many amendments to the bill & she explains incredibly well why this bill is still "unconstitutional on its face"
As @DrJBhattacharya said this "California Assembly bill turns doctors into agents of state public health rather than advocates for their patients"
That should frighten all of us.
#AB2098

I just leaned it looks like the bill advanced & will now go to the Appropriations Committee.

Voting straight down party lines. Sad but not surprising.
A scary situation for California when so much power seems to rest in the hands of one political party.

Massive Nordic study finds risk of post-vaccination
myo/pericarditis resulting in hospitalization in males 16-24 of 380/million (1/2600) post pfizer-moderna combination
This is 28x higher than the 13.7/million rate they found post-covid🧵
jamanetwork.com/journals/jamac…
Myocarditis rates lower in males 16-24 with pfizer alone:
22/million post pfizer dose 1
53/million post pfizer dose 2
29/million post moderna dose 1
138/million post moderna dose 2
All higher than 13.7/million post covid
above are myo(not peri)carditis& hospitalized cases only
Recall the CDC recently found these rates:

220-360/million myopericarditis among boys 12-17 post dose 2 pfizer and
and 65-150/million myopericarditis in men 18-29
(but post covid myo rate based on too low a denominator in this study; not reliable)

🇩🇰Denmark estimates 70% of Danes 17-72 years were infected w/covid from November 1, 2021- March 8th, 2022 (based on antinucleocapsid antibodies)

Look at the incredible drop in infection fatality rate w/omicron (& w/35-50% of these deaths now incidental)
ssi.dk/aktuelt/nyhede…
🇩🇰Concomitant w/the precipitous drop in covid +s in Denmark, they're seeing a massive rise in influenza cases, higher than at any time in the last 5 years.
Note-flu cases *totally flat* during the pandemic up to now DESPITE NOT MASKING KIDS <12
🤔🙂
The huge rise in infection-based immunity could help explain the rather unimpressive correlation between vaccination status and covid hospitalization incidence per vax group currently seen in Denmark

New Israeli study of booster-associated myocarditis. In 18-24 yo males, they found an incidence of 1/9000 or 110/million doses. Considering we don't know how many in this age group need 3rd doses to prevent 1 covid hospitalization, this seems concerning

jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…
Database of almost 5 million people from Israel, booster had no detectable benefit against severe disease in those <40
nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
Current Danish data showing rates of infection among boosted not lower (if anything higher) than those with 2 or no vax

Most of us knew that the Pediatrics study finding 87% lower in-school transmission in masked districts had a major confounder/s
If what @VPrasadMDMPH says here is true: some districts don't count masked students as contacts-OF COURSE transmission in those districts appears lower!
Can anyone here comment on local contact tracing policies that exclude masked students as contacts even when these students are positive for covid? Doing this would give the appearance of essentially no in school transmission in districts w/mask mandates, hugely biasing results
The authors don't list this potential bias, so I'm trying to verify this is happening w/local contact tracing policies bc it could bias all US studies of student masking that include these districts - consistently giving the appearance of lower transmission in masked districts

What do we know about vaccine safety & efficacy in kids? Why is choice essential & individualization indicated?
(A follow-up thread to my participation in @GovRonDeSantis 's roundtable discussion yesterday👇; feel free to add corrections/other data) 1/

Our group's paper finds more harm than benefit of dose 2 for healthy 12-17 year olds, especially boys & especially now in the setting of omicron. For children who are already immune there's not yet evidence the vaccine will benefit, but it can harm 2/ onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ec…
The myocarditis safety signal in adolescents is well-established & the rates we found of myocarditis in 12-17 yos using VAERS (orange) are not outliers when looking at international data sets & other peer reviewed studies (figure also from @KrugAlli et al onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ec…)

.@drdrew is a fantastic interviewer & he caught me on a good day bc our VAERS preprint was just published (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ec…) re post vax myo in adolescents. We covered the study's findings, why individ vax recs in kids are indicated & why child vax mandates are nonsensical
Thank you to Ernesto Ramirez for calling in and telling the heartbreaking story of his son's tragic death following vaccination.

Thank you also to @KrugAlli & @ifihadastick- incredible researchers and people who made the publication at @ejci happen.
Now when @joerogan talks about the rates of post-vax myocarditis in boys we identified using VAERS vs hospitalization risk (now 120 day & overall), he can cite our peer reviewed study which also includes multiple international estimates of post vax myo 👍
