🏳️‍⚧️Trans Rights are Human Rights.🏳️‍⚧️

We must pass federal legislation to ensure those words have meaning. 🧵⬇️
Trans communities, especially trans youth, are under attack by Republicans seeking to strip them of their rights, identities and the essential services and protections that keep them safe.

We must respond forcefully and with solutions that ensure their equality and protection.⬇️
Federal laws supersede state laws, which means Congress can directly undo the damage being done by homophobic and transphobic Republican state legislatures.

In response to these increasing attacks, I'm proud to release my Transgender Rights Agenda ⬇️
darrigo2022.com/transrights
Right now, transgender people are disproportionately impacted by violence, poverty and discriminated against in healthcare, housing, education and government services.

The rates at which they are affected increase for Black and Brown trans individuals.⬇️
From bigoted sports bans to legislation preventing queer history from being taught in schools, conservatives are hell-bent on erasing the existence of LGBTQ+ identities.

We have a moral obligation to protect them — our friends, family and community members.⬇️
As a co-founder of an LGBTQ+ non-profit, I take protecting trans lives seriously. In Congress, I will work to whip votes and ensure that the Equality Act finally passes.⬇️
The Equality Act amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination on the basis of gender, gender identity and sexual orientation in employment, housing, education, public accommodations, federally funded programs, credit and jury duty.⬇️
29% of trans Americans have been refused medical care by a doctor or provider due to their gender identity.

This harm, based in bigotry, is abhorrent — but we can do something about it. ⬇️
The Equality Act, paired with #MedicareForAll, would ensure that no one is denied the medical care they need because of discrimination, coverage or cost, including the gender affirming care needed to allow everyone to identify exactly how they choose. ⬇️
1 in 5 trans Americans have experienced homelessness. Because of factors including family rejection, discrimination and violence, transgender and other LGBQ-identified youth make up an estimated 20 - 40% of the more than 1.6 million homeless youth. ⬇️
We must fully fund programs that support LGBTQ+ youth and keep them safe and housed as well as ensuring policies surrounding home care, foster care and adoption are inclusive and non-discriminatory.

We must also end the barbaric practice of conversion therapy.⬇️
For federal funds to be properly allocated for resources for LGBTQ+ communities, we must ensure that they are properly represented in government data. LGBTQ+ identities must be included in the U.S. Census to avoid undercounts that result in underfunding vital LGBTQ+ programs.⬇️
To combat the hate crimes and discrimination at the local level, we must promote understanding, empathy and equality towards our LGBTQ+ communities by increasing exposure through education of their history and diversity of our families.⬇️
Almost 2 million Americans identify as transgender and are in desperate need of codified federal protections to guarantee their equality, safety and protection not just as Americans, but as people.

When I say, “Trans Rights are Human Rights” I will always back it up with action.

The House Oversight Committee will be holding a #MedicareForAll hearing on Tuesday — the first since the pandemic began and exposed just how much harm our for-profit healthcare system has done to families and our economy.

🧵Here are 🔟 things you may not know about #M4A ⬇️
1⃣ Health insurance ≠ healthcare.

#MedicareForAll would guarantee high-quality healthcare to every single person in America. "Healthcare is a human right," means there are no physical, bureaucratic or financial barriers to care — which is what #M4A delivers. ⬇️
2⃣ #MedicareForAll removes the red tape and financial barriers to care. When you're sick, you can just see your doctor. There would be no more worrying about which doctors are in your insurance company's network, if you've hit your deductible or if your visit will be covered. ⬇️

Recuse, Resign and Step Aside: I’m calling for the removal of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas from his seat. 🧵⬇️
“Clarence Thomas must recuse, resign, and step aside. The reports that his wife repeatedly used her influence to try and overturn the 2020 Presidential election are deeply disturbing, but not surprising. ⬇️
For years, Ginni Thomas has used her husband's position to further herself and her radical, right-wing agenda—and for years, he has tipped the scales in her favor. All the while, the dark money groups fueling their priorities continue to reap the benefits and build power. ⬇️

President Joe Biden laid out a vision to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting economic crisis that have challenged working families across the country. ⬇️
If our federal government can come together to adopt progressive policies that prioritize working families over corporations…
⬇️
there is a path forward that allows us to emerge from this period of collective struggle as a healthier, more equitable, and more compassionate society than we have ever been before.

Universal healthcare is a necessary, moral and fiscally responsible solution to our country's healthcare crisis.

So why don't we have #MedicareForAll? And why is there so much misinformation spread about it?

Let's bust some #M4A myths:
🧵⬇️
Health insurance is not the same as healthcare.

People would move from their restrictive insurance plans and upgrade to #MedicareForAll

No more private insurance with varying degrees of coverage, restrictive networks, dealing with insurance bureaucracy or medical bills.
⬇️
Universal healthcare with #MedicareForAll would be government-funded, not government-run.

Government funding would go directly to paying for your healthcare— eliminating your co-pays and premiums, instead of going towards insurance industry subsidies.

People are living longer, earning less and their quality of life is declining. The dream of retirement isn’t something many seniors can realize.
#NY3 has over 155,000 adults over the age of 65. The problems they face are policy choices we can correct. Here are some ways how:
🧵⬇️
Over 60% of seniors depend on Social Security for most of their income and one-third rely on it for virtually all of it.

Without Social Security, the poverty rate of seniors would be nearly 41%. We must protect and expand it.
⬇️
The average adult over 65 receives a social security check of $1,437.55 per month. Unfortunately, the average expenses of an adult 65 and older is $4,008.83.

A cause of this problem? Right now, a billionaire pays as much into social security as someone who is middle class.

By the looks of it, the next Representative for #NY3 will need a boat to serve all constituents.

Below is my statement on the alleged new congressional maps for #NY3 ⬇️
“By the looks of it, the next Representative for New York’s Third Congressional District will need a boat to cross the Long Island Sound to serve all constituents.

“We cannot stay silent as we watch the state legislature float a map that extreme gerrymanders our district... ⬇️
The new proposal would take our district from currently containing three counties to soon containing five, including just slivers from the Bronx and Westchester that are separated from the rest by the Long Island Sound. ... ⬇️
