Here's my (long) take on why specifically women-led NFT projects don't make it in this space in the same way other projects do. This is my take. Take it as you may. Here goes 😬

#NFTCommunity #NFTprojects #Women
2/18
First, stats. ArtTactic Nov/'21: Women make up just 16% of the NFT market (let's just round that up to 20% for Apr/'22 to make it easier and probably more realistic now).
How big is the NFT Market?
3/18
According to Opensea, 250 000 people trade with them every month, which is about right with the stat that says there are about 270 000 active wallets our there (source: youngandtheinvested.com, for example). Not much at all, hey?
4/18
According to fortunely.com: Men are 3x more likely than women to be NFT collectors, and according to the Washington Post: "A Quinnipiac University poll from March found that 43% of women had heard of NFTs, compared with 61% of men...
5/18
... while 20% of women said they heard or read a lot about cryptocurrency, compared with 38& of men".
But there's more.
Papermag: male NFT artists make up 77% of all primary and secondary sales; women only 5% (16% uncategorised). (shocker!)
6/18
A summary is needed about now: 270k active wallets, of which 20% are women. 77% of primary and secondary sales go to male artists/creators; only 5% to women. But there's even more. Yes, it gets a little worse 🫤
7/18
Blue-chip projects? None are women-led. Top 10 or 20 projects for 22? Only 1 is generally referred (Women Rise).
So, let's recap that again with some math: there are roughly 54k female-owned wallets trading every month into what is a 77% (white) male-revenue market 😬
8/18
Let's ramp up the complexity on this. Women-led projects, by overwhelming majority, create female PFPs. Do men buy them? Yes. Do men USE them? Well, no. Not really. Women do.
9/18
More stats: Non-gender specific projects only have about 30% female PFPs, making them rarer but by no means more valuable.
Why? Well, because only 20% of the market is female, roughly 54 k wallets trading per month, as said above.
10/18
That's basically the women-led market right there: other women, who account for 20% of a market that is (white) male dominated in terms of revenue, projects and showing PFPs off to the world. This is a minority market (figures there are even lower, btw 🙁 ).
11/18
Women-led projects are, basically, preaching to the choir and creating even more barriers when they market themselves as being so. No matter how great the intentions and wanting to be inclusive, the choir is what it is and will take time to change.
12/18
If creators/artists are comfortable with this 54 k potential target group, great! Work it until you drop. If not, things need to be done differently.
This is going to hurt saying but, don't say you're women-led. Just doxx the team and let people see for themselves 👀
13/18
Don't make it a point of honour to do so (unless it is). Women will use male/genderless PFPs at higher rates than men. Take advantage of that and diversify your project (ironic, I know 🙄). M/F PFP project in the works? Make it 50/50. Make the Fs rarer, more valuable.
14/18
Don't focus your roadmap on educating women on crypto and NFTs. Make that part of your communication and educate everyone (we ALL need it - we're all early, remember?). Don't discriminate. Don't make women FEEL they're less than their male counterparts. We're not.
15/18
Just like you don't see men-led projects explicitly marketing directly on that basis or to that target, women/minority-led projects shouldn't either (unless that's their thing). Who you are, what you do and what you're capable of isn't/shouldn't be tied to your gender.
16/18
I know most of what I've said here falls right in with the "unpopular opinion" label, but, if it were me leading the comms on a women-led project, this is the way I would go. If you can't beat them, join them (and then "destroy" them from the inside).
17/18
PLAY THE GAME. "Obey" the rules. And then let your results break those rules for you. All the while, you focussed on team, art, community, utility, and everything else under the sun and not on the fact you are female in a male world. Imagine not having that added stress?
18/18
So, there it is. Mostly. I could go for another 18 tweets on comms alone (major head-ache for MANY projects).
Anything else really important I missed or can better explain?
Thanks for reading.

Thought I'd add some extra info on @Twitter usage seeing as it's THE nft platform.
And yes, it gets worse for women-led projects if you bear in mind the above info.
Here we go again.
20/n
- Twitter ACTIVE users: 217 million - Feb/'22
- 68.1% of Twitter users are male. 31.9% are female.
That's about 69 million female Twitter users worldwide.
- Most of Twitter’s audience is 25 to 34 years old (38.5%) and male. Next? 35-49 yo (20%)
21/n
- The US has the most Twitter users - 78 million.
Of these: 62% are male, 38% are female.
That's about 29 million female active users in the US.
Japan is the next country with most users followed by India, UK, Brazil, Indonesia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Thailand
22/n
Let's get the math out again.
Women make up 20% of the NFT market/active crypto wallet stats. That's roughly 54 k female wallets trading into a market that's 77% male (total of 250 k monthly traders per Opensea).
23/n
The NFT platform, Twitter, has 69 million female users worldwide, mainly 25-49 yo. And we know there are only 54k female wallets so, here, the market is far from explored.
24/n
And here's the kicker:
Twitter is ranked as the 16th most popular social networking worldwide (ranked by a number of monthly active users). This means Twitter has 8.85% of the world’s overall social media user base and it's where NFTs LIVE and breathe.
25/n
If all these stats don't scare the shit out of you when you look into creating an NFT project you'll be marketing as women-led and directed at a female-Twitter-crypto-wallet-holding audience, then I don't know what will.
26/n
But there's good news. You can fight this and work around it. There are ways. Communication and marketing play a HUGE role in that. Strategise the shit out of these stats, play the game, change the rules after you win.
Good luck! 😬
