some important trends in Russian propaganda now. Important to follow how they change, and why. A short thread with some takeaways -- More in our regular coverage of RU propaganda (link at the end of the thread). 1/8
one of the new narrative is that Russia's war in Ukraine is actually a... "war for Russia's independence". The independence meant here is the independence from the "West". Russia is presented as a "colony" of the West which tries to liberate itself 2/8
another narrative is that this war is a "genocide of the Russian people" and destruction of the "Russian genotype". The war was not "willed" by the Russians, was "provoked" by the West to annihilate a united "Russian people" (Russians and Ukrainians are the "same nation") 3/8
two important conclusions from these narratives. 1) they are "upside-down" of the Ukrainian description of this war. Ukrainians say this is war for Ukraine's final independence from Russia, and that Russians have been organizing genocide of Ukrainians for decades/centuries 4/8
2) these RU narratives develop an idea that Russia is waging a "defensive" war. Instead of "punishing" narrative (Russia will punish Ukrainian "Nazis"), there is a "defensive" narrative (Russia is alone against the global "Nazis", imperialists, colonialists, genociders) 5/8
our hypothesis is that the defensive narrative can help military mobilization much more than the "punishment" narrative. People are much more motivated if they are told to "defend" their land 6/8
But all in all, it's remarkable how Russia puts everything upside down. It is an empire that presents itself as a colony, a fascist state presenting itself as fighting fascism, and waging a genocidal war saying it suffers from genocide. 7/8
A story of Tetyana, a teacher from Mariupol, who lost her husband and her house during Russian bombing. A must read thread. 1/14 #UkraineWorldTestimony
During the 1st week of the war, Tetyana and her family stayed at home: she, her husband, a 13-year-old daughter, and a dog. 2/14
Her husband set up a shelter and brought people there from more dangerous areas. 3/14
UA defence minister on meeting at Ramstein:
> historical events take place. We have already changed the world.
> An Advisory Group on Defense of Ukraine has been established. A permanent mechanism will speed up obtaining weapons, improve logistics.
1/5
> not only the EU & NATO but the states of Africa, the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific form a coalition with goal not just to restrain the Kremlin, but to defeat RU tyranny
> my priority was to ensure 🇺🇦's de facto integration into NATO, the transition to Western technology
2/5
> "transition" was the key word of the meeting. The transition, which began more than 30 years ago and is now close to its final phase
> it's not just about the supply of weapons. We talked about its manufacturing and UA place in it - the basis of long-term cooperation

some foreign media continue to call Azov batallion "neo-Nazi". Azov was stationed for 8 years in Mariupol and surroundings but nobody heard about "Nazi" actions (mass killings, torture, mass graves). Ukraine is under constant scrutiny of international organizations 1/4
then Russians came and you have it all: mass killings, tortures, mass graves. And Azov is heroically (the world forgot this word) defending Mariupol against it. Against the real new Nazism 2/4
"Nazism" is an ideology which requires the infernal work of the immense state mechanism of violence. "Neo-Nazi" is a word used by some people to describe far-right nationalism which never ever had a tiny chance to have access to these resources 3/4
#Analysis: Ukrainian army needs more shells for its artillery. On Donbas, it outnumbers Russians in personnel, but has less equipment and shells, says Yuriy Butusov, a popular Ukrainian war journalist, quoted by @tweetsNV 1/3
Today's war is primarily about logistics. Russians are concentrating their forces on several points in Donbas where they try to break through the Ukrainian defense. 2/3
Ukraine also needs drones for better correcting its fire. Ukrainian soldiers are confident that Ukraine will win. All now depends on the efficiency and accuracy of artillery, incl. supplied by NATO countries, he says 3/3
Kyiv oblast. Bucha district. Horrors of the Russian invasion. Testimony of a witness. A thread 1/10 #UkraineWorldTestimony
On Feb 28, 2022, Russian vehicles moved through the village of Makariv in the direction of Kyiv. Over 45 tanks, 10 infantry fighting vehicles, 2 BUKs and many personal vehicles. Local activists organized into a territorial defense. Buzova became one of such settlements. 2/10
That day, the defense needed fuel. But after the shocking footage from Borodyanka, everyone understood the risks of going to the Zhytomyr highway. When a local resident, 33-year-old Oleg Tkachuk, heard about the needs of his native village, he volunteered to bring fuel. 3/10
