🔴 NEW INVESTIGATION - Toxic Gold: the heavy toll of Ghana’s illegal gold rush
In our first #GreenCrimes investigation, conducted in collaboration with @fourthestategh and @reporters_co, we uncovered the toll of Ghana's illegal gold mines. Farmers are evicted to expand mines, gold is trafficked, and money is openly laundered. 🧵 1/5
@fourthestategh @reporters_co Violence is omnipresent in southwestern Ghana, the epicenter of the country’s gold rush, and journalists trying to report on it have been abducted, beaten or received death threats. 🧵 2/5
Using satellite imagery from 2024 and Earth Index’s AI model, we’ve pinpointed the areas most affected by mining in southwestern Ghana. The algorithm analyzes the distinctive patterns of artisanal mining operations, allowing us to identify nearly 150,000 hectares of mining sites — some located in protected areas. 🧵 3/5
🔴 How are Israeli drones killing journalists in Gaza?
For the #GazaProject, 50 journalists from 13 international newsrooms coordinated by @FbdnStories investigated the targeting of those who were covering the war. ⬇️
Samer Abu Daqqa, Abdallah Al-Hajj, Ahmed Fatima, Anas Al-Sharif… their names are among those of the 18 reporters we identified as injured or killed by precision strikes launched by drones, since the outbreak of Israel’s war in Gaza following Hamas’ terrorist attack on October 7th. Four of them were wearing press vests and were clearly identifiable as journalists.

The Israeli military is also using several artificial intelligence systems to generate targets. Lavender, an artificial intelligence–based program used to generate a kill list of over 37,000 people, has served as a blueprint for signature drone strikes since October 7, the consortium found.
En partant de cette annonce, nous avons découvert des dizaines et des dizaines de parcelles enregistrées au nom d’individus dans des zones de l’Amazonie pourtant protégées et interdites à la propriété.
