@Team_English1 #teamenglish #EAL #Ukraine
I keep seeing lots of Tweets asking for help as a school has got new students coming from Ukraine with no English
Here are some useful sites and resources
1. A webinar for supporting new refugee arrivals
bell-foundation.org.uk/training-event…
2. A webinar specifically for welcoming Ukrainian arrivals
bell-foundation.org.uk/training-event…
3. A webinar specifically for supporting new refugee arrivals in primary schools

bell-foundation.org.uk/training-event…
4. This time for secondary schools, supporting new refugee arrivals

bell-foundation.org.uk/training-event…
5. Previous webinars that can be used for advice and CPD

youtube.com/playlist?list=…
6. A myriad of free resources, you'll only need to register.
The resources come with teaching notes which are like a mini CPD session if you're unfamiliar with working with EAL students

bell-foundation.org.uk/resources/prog…
7. An assessment framework and tracker, essential to monitor the progress being made by your students

bell-foundation.org.uk/eal-programme/…
8. Great ideas and strategies to support your learners

bell-foundation.org.uk/eal-programme/…
9. An incredible list of resources specifically aimed at Ukrainian speakers but also contains other resources that can be used for speakers of other languages
Thanks to Joanna Ceremuga for this
@BeeTheka

docs.google.com/document/u/0/d…
10. Numeracy and Literacy tests in more than 20 languages that will help you assess a student's prior learning and knowledge

reseau-canope.fr/eana-outils-de…
11. A list of resources to help EAL learners. Originally compiled for use during the first lockdown

ealjournal.org/2020/03/20/res…
12. CPD and other paid for services, as well as some that are free are available from:
@BellFoundation
@EALACADEMY
@HLS_EAL
@HampshireEMTAS
@BetterBilingual
And others
13. Useful people to follow are:
@catharineEAL who developed a wonderful #EAL maths curriculum
@BifieldJonathan for his blog
@eal_teaching for their free resources that include an excellent mini taster curriculum
@DiLeed for great advice
@4bilingualism for bilingualism
14. DMs are open for advice and if you'd like me to add you to any of the lists
15. Please avoid EFL/MFL style resources as they don't help students to access the curriculum although the techniques are transferable
Also any site that claims to cater for EAL SEN and Literacy, again techniques might be transferable but the learners needs aren't the same
16. @JKolota has a great example of work that is scaffolded and designed to challenge #EAL learners without dumbing down the curriculum.
Explicit vocabulary instruction, modelling, guided practice, structured talk are some of the strategies used to support the in mainstream
17. Join the #EAL Google Group with over 700 members to get advice and share ideas

groups.google.com/g/eal-bilingua…
18. The Young Interpreter Scheme run by @HampshireEMTAS is also excellent

hants.gov.uk/educationandle…
19. Recommend and build links with the Complementary and Supplementary School network for the maintenance and development of the first language and culture

If anyone has any links to these I'd be grateful if you could share
20. Encourage and support students in taking Home/Community Language GCSEs and A Levels, available in about 20 different languages.
They are recognised as formal qualifications and are accepted by universities and give UCAS points at the same level as other qualifications
Thanks @chrisp09
I somehow couldn't find you on my Twitter feed
22. Join @EAL_naldic and receive the @EAL_Journal
23. Some do nots
Don't take #EAL students out of #mfl classes
Don't put students back a year to 'catch up' or learn English. They'll lose a year of funding at post-16 when they are entitled to three years
24. If you work with students from marginalised communities, such as the #Roma, build links with organisations such as @LutonRomaTrust @RomaSupport @IdeeaRomNotts
They provide excellent support, advice and guidance
26. If you are working with refugees then @CityofSanctuary are a good starting place to build links
These are too
@welshrefcouncil
@RefugeeAction
@refugeecouncil
@RefugeeEdUK
@refugeesnews1
Also join your national or local EAL groups such as @satealorg @ELSTA_2020 @EALAW1
If there are others please add here
27. @collearn
I forgot to add this excellent site
collaborativelearning.org
29. @chrisp09 and @catharineEAL for these very accessible and very handy '100 Ideas' books on supporting EAL Learners - for both primary and secondary teachers. #eal A photo of two books by Catharine Driver and Chris Pim for t
