Okay, you guys have been requesting more #TabletopGails threads, so here we go!
First, I’ve said it for a while, but one of my favorite game companies is @restorationgames, who ONLY make great games. They tend to specialize in remakes of long out of print beloved games.
4/
BUT they make another great series, UNMATCHED, sometimes in cooperation with @MondoNews, which is a fantastic two player strategic combat game, featuring beloved heroes of history and film. You can have Medusa fight Sherlock Holmes!
Now they have MARVEL!
5/
I have not played these two new sets…each is standalone, but you can ALSO mix and match. And the timing couldn’t be more perfect, I LOVE the characters they have chosen for these sets.
Gameplay is easy to learn, different every time!
6/
I can’t even tell you how fun it is to have, say, the Raptors from Jurassic Park fight Robin Hood, for instance.
But more than that, the base game is just a blast. I have never felt more comfortable giving the highest recommendation, the game is just pure FUN. Look!
7/
As always with these threads, ALL the games and stuff I have been sent were sent as gifts/prototypes from the game publishers. I am not paid for my opinions in any other way. I just like games and I think talking about them can really help during all this weird stuff!
8/
Also, FEEL FREE to jump in, and ask questions, the publishers or game creators usually show up to answer them eventually. If something sounds cool, take a chance on one, they can really make being cooped up at home a LOT more fun. 9/
Next, this lovely book, does come with a disclosure. I love @koboldpress, one of my favorite RPG publishers. But I also have a piece in this one, a heartfelt piece about adding dimension to your writing. WELL WORTH it, it’s a great book!
KOBOLD GUIDE TO WORLDBUILDING V2!
10/
Now, this next one seems weird, it’s definitely a game kids can play. But dang, it was also super fun and we played a bunch in a row. IT’S A SMALL WORLD from @funkogames!
Play it with a Disneyland soundtrack, it really is a joy to play!
11/
When the pieces are set up, it has classic Mary Blair-esque art, and the movement of the boats is extremely clever. It all feels like being there, and it’s a little tougher than it sounds to win.
@Funkogames is killing it with their Disney games, I must say. Fun!
12/
I bought this mystery game from @universitygames, I have to say I don’t know much about it but the reviews were good.
Anyone played a game in this series? How did you like it?
More info when we get it open!
Looks like a nice murder game, which we are loving.
12/
Now, these next excellent games are from @PortalGamesUS and include some of the MOST recommended games you guys have been yelling at me about.
Let's look!
13/
A final reminder, I am not doing this for any reason other than this...we sort of re-discovered RPGs and board games when we were feeling cramped in during lockdown. The community is lovely and the games have gotten SO MUCH BETTER. I want to share that joy!
14/
First is Robinson Crusoe!
Now, this is probably THE most recommended game you guys have been at me to try. I know it’s already a bit of a legend, but I have NOT PLAYED it yet!
Hopefully tonight!
MAN, it looks fun. Is it resource management?
15
Now, these next couple are related a bit. @PortalGamesUS does an incredible series of crime games that use a similar gameplay…where you really examine evidence, some on cards, some online. It’s called DETECTIVE, and we played Season One. WE. LOVED. IT.
So they sent stuff!
16/
First is DETECTIVE: EVERYBODY LIES
Which is the same style game, but this time with Batman. You play Gotham City characters and interact with data on cards and on a special online portal. This JUST came out, I got a preview copy. It’s incredible.
17/
Brief interruption for a short zoom meeting.
COME BACK FOR THE REST OF THE GAMES AND ALSO THE DICE, BABY!
18/
OKAY! I'm back!
I just had a zoom call where I had to sign an NDA before they could even speak to me and so I had NO IDEA what they wanted but it was for something so incredible I can't even stand it. YAY!
NEW FUN GIGS!
19/
Okay, back to the games!
DETECTIVE: EVERYBODY LIES is highly recommended, it serves my favorite aspect of Batman, the team out looking for clues in the streets of Gotham. Great components, great writing, you REALLY feel part of the story!
Now, I BELIEVE all of these PORTAL games have been designed by the brilliant Ignacy Trzewiczek. DETECTIVE is one of our favorite new series, and they have taken a lot of the game mechanics for this game...
DUNE:
HOUSE SECRETS
21/
They sent us this one because RocketKid is a huge Dune fan, so we are looking forward to this, and seeing how the game mechanics work. Hubby doesn’t know DUNE as well, so it’ll be interesting to see how we experience the game. Beautiful components!
22/
Okay, so I think that’s it for this #TabletopGails thread, except
BONUS BONUS BONUS!
A couple weeks back, the lovely Cal at @Dragonsworn_ offered to make me a set of custom, hand-made dice.
I couldn’t decide between two styles.
SO SHE SENT BOTH.
23/
First, look at these, each has a little moth inside (not real, don’t panic)… the effect is incredible, and the dice are some of the highest quality I have ever held. Gorgeous!
I have been thinking this forever but this morning it really hit me.
@stephenking is a badass.
Just a combustion engine. Love that guy.
1/
There have been a dozen times where the thing getting me through a tough time was simply having a Stephen King novel or anthology or movie adaptation to enjoy.
2/
When I was a kid, the very first novel I ever read (I was probably a little young for it) where the cast was all female and took all roles from villain to tragic hero and everywhere in-between was Carrie. To this DAY, I still haven't read many novels that can make that claim.
3/
I hear all the time, and have thought it myself, why does the world fear and hate mutants, but love the scary-looking oddballs in, say, the Fantastic Four?
Here is a thought about that.
1/
The Fantastic Four comes to save you.
You look out, and you see standing around you;
A woman who disappears
A man on fire
A rock-like golen creature
and the ultimate stretchy body horror.
OR.
2/
You look out and see
A great-looking guy with sunglasses
A beautiful woman with a cool fire bird effect
A goddess controlling a storm
A slightly hairy Canadian.
Why are citizens afraid of THIS four, and not the others?
When I was in second grade, our teacher read us, over the course of several days, an adaptation of Cool Hand Luke.
None of us knew anything about prisons, Southern culture, road gangs, prisoner abuse, or crime in general, really. We were seven years old, and enthralled.
1/
I remember, NO ONE missed school after the first day.
It starts with Luke, played by Paul Newman in the movie, getting drunk and busting up parking meters, for no good reason, so your introduction to him, in a child’s’ view, is bad, not revolutionary.
2/
Spoilers, but Luke ends up paying a heavy price for simply not being able to go along with what he is told to do, the falsehoods he is told are true. It is inevitable, even as kids we knew there would be no happy ending.
And we know it was wrong, the escalation. As kids.
3/
One of my favorite moments of the #DeadpoolAndWolverine World Premiere night.
The actual event was loud and flashy, the movie was bombastic. And I’m shy.
After it was over, walking back to my hotel with my beloved hubby…
1/
We saw Chris Claremont (resplendent in his pink jacket) in a quiet spot in a little park across from the huge event facade.
He took a photo, I think, and it might just be my fangirl imagination, but it seemed to me he was contemplating the spectacle and his role in it all…
2/
I didn’t want to interrupt.
So I just said hi, in passing. But he had some musings which I will treasure to have been there to hear.
And he talked a little about Hugh Jackman and the choices they made with the writing and performing of the character.
3/
All right, so this will take a bit, but this is a thread I have wanted to do for a while.
This is it, the X-MEN: FROM THE ASHES mega-thread!
Interested in the upcoming X-books but a little overwhelmed by the new characters, creative teams, and titles?
Well, I had an idea!
1/
In this thread, I am going to give an unapologetic personal opinion about each of the upcoming titles, starting with tomorrow's X-MEN #1.
I admit up front I am biased, okay? These are MY opinions, I have not consulted with the creative or editorial teams.
2/
I have read all the issues of all these books so far. They are all creative teams I like. They are all pushing for the best books they can. And I am on a bit of an X-Men high and don't deny my OBVIOUS enthusiasm.
