3. No Navajo Enrollment,
4. So #MMIW wouldn’t apply to them.

It’s “Missing and Murdered INDIGENOUS Women,” not “Missing and Murdered FEDERALLY ENROLLED Women.”

There’s NO PLACE for this kind of gatekeeping in the face of violence.

Enrollment status of victims does NOT make Indian Country safer or more just for the vulnerable.

“Was the victim federally enrolled” is ALWAYS the wrong fucking question.

“Indigenous” and “Indian” (FeDeRaLlY eNrOlLeD) aren’t even the same thing!

That’s NOT MY TAKE, that’s Federal Indian Policy and Law!!!

I didn’t write that, the US did.

It’s profoundly perverse to say that Federal Recognition and “Federal Enrollment” are MANDATORY for inclusion in #MMIW.

As if violence against INDIGENOUS Women didn’t count because they weren’t “Federally Enrolled.”

I have skin in this game and if you have Indigenous Women in YOUR family is if you’re an Indigenous Woman yourself, you do too.

You have skin in the game if your Tribal Community or Urban Indian Community are affected by violence.

We all have a stake.

If you have a rabid, fucking animal in your community, the paperwork of the people it MAULS isn’t the focus of the problem.

Count your lucky stars that this clout-chasing Public Indian has no actual authority or expertise.

This isn’t Termination Era or Jim Crow, this isn’t a federal employee (or one of any kind) deciding who eats or is recognized in Indian Country.

At best, living examples of extremism are sobering warnings as to where settler-colonialism can take us, where demagoguery can pervert Indigeneity.

They’re what we must not elect, become, or go back to.

We can be better, we can be kinder, we can have more integrity.
