Some context for our panel on Native Voting at @Netroots_Nation:

Demographically, there are 5.2 million Native Americans from the 2010 census. There are over 700 tribes in this country, 573+ federally recognized , over 200 state recognized tribes. #NN20
Tribal nations in aggregate are the 13th largest employer in the nation and we manage approximately 56 million acres of land held in trust by the U.S. Government. #NN20
Over the year there have been two Native American Presidential Forums where we brought together tribal leaders, citizens, political candidates to talk about issues of importance in Indian Communities, such as #MMIW , #ClimateChange, Media Representation.…

An 18 year old Salvi boy, #AndresGuardado who was helping an LA autobody shop with security issues in the Gardena District of LA was murdered by police on June 18th. They allege that he had a gun and ran away from them when they “approached” him.
His heartbroken family has said, “We didn’t know him to keep guns—he worked two jobs and was a good kid. We’re all dead inside.”
The auto shop owner whom Andres was helping for months said he never carried a gun was obviously scared when police drew their weapons on him. When asked about the decision by police to shoot Andres, he said, “There’s no reason.”

Hey followers - there's over 3000 of you but we don't know each other very well.

For years now I've been sharing issues ranging from #disabilityrights, being #autistic in an #ableist society, to #vaccines, #MMIW, #alttext, #Dyslexia, #dyspraxic, #Epilepsy, #racism, #PTSD,
#depression, #domesticabuse being the cores of what I share and lands in your timelines.

I've recently shared with you all that I'm in a process of reclamation - my culture, my identity, my gender, my sexual preferences - all of it.

So now you know my skin is white passing
but I am also part #Aboriginal and that matters deeply to me and I won't be erased anymore.

I am #pansexual. I don't need you to be of any particular gender to be attracted to you.

I am a #nonbinary #femme. But I also lean heavy in masc traits sometimes too.

Try: "Hey RCMP. Can you point to me when exactly in your history, you departed from your literal original purpose of terrorizing Black & Indigenous communities, and if you have not done this, can you justify why?"

Minneapolis has a long history of police brutality. Starting in the 1950s, a lot of police violence was directed at Native people living in the Twin Cities. 1/
The Federal government had developed a series of policies to "terminate" reservations and created incentives to induce Native people to move to cities. (This was part of a long assault against Native sovereignty and the intent was to destroy Native communities and cultures.) 2/
Many of these "relocated" people came to Minneapolis, which became an upper midwest population center for Native people from around the country. 3/

The gunman in #Canada’s worst mass shooting was a white man. Most mass shooters are.

Police in white supremacist countries downplay the violence of white men.
Esp when it’s directed against marginalized women such as indigenous women and sex workers 👉🏽…
(cw: vaw) Robert Pickton, one of the most notorious serial killers in history. He targeted mostly sex workers and Indigenous women, some dealing with addictions or mental health issues, in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. He admitted to butchering 49 women and feeding them to pigs.
When mothers, fathers or other relatives would go to Vancouver police to report their loved one missing, they were dismissed.

"And their response invariably would be: 'Well, we don't have time to look for hookers. Your daughter is a drug addict. What do you expect us to do?“

the #SuperBowl has reignited controversy around Native mascots. proponents of @NFL team names like the @Chiefs & @Redskins claim the terms are intended to honor, & are used respectfully.

i found over 170,000 tweets showing the opposite.

full results:…

.@NFL claims terms like 'r*dskins' & 'chiefs' are no longer used offensively. i tested 26 negative/offensive terms & found over 120k instances of these being used in tweets about the @Chiefs & @49ers -- the other #SuperBowl 2020 team.

which team led in hate speech?
CN: anti-Native racism

if you guessed the @Chiefs had by far the most negative/hate speech, for almost every hateful or offensive term tested, you'd be correct. despite both these teams place in the #SuperBowl, the vast majority of hate speech is associated with the Chiefs.

Speaking of Native American women facing appallingly high levels of violence, the Senate is finally holding a hearing today to discuss 2 bills -- Savanna's Act + Not Invisible Act -- relating to missing and murdered indigenous women. #MMIW

Should be starting soon.
It's a largely invisible crisis. 100s of Native American women are simply disappearing or being murdered.

There is next to no data available on what, exactly, is going on, either.…
Savanna's Act boosts coordination & data collection among tribal, local, state + federal law enforcement in cases involving missing & murdered Native women.

Sen. Murkowski told me her bill is a starting pt for addressing this. “We don’t even know what we don’t know with this."

Alright, thread time. I've spent too much time arguing with racists today and my energy would be better spent organizing my thoughts. Re: headdresses and why only certain people are allowed to wear them. (Spoiler: it doesn't have to do with being Native) 1/
For the purposes of this thread, I'm going to use headdress and warbonnet interchangeably. The most easily recognizable style comes from Plains tribes (Lakota especially), though Blackfeet traditionally had a "straight-up" headdress (more tubular). Examples below 2/
Other tribes had head wear that featured feathers (Haudenosaunee gustoweh comes to mind) but none are copied half as much as the first style. With that in mind, we can get into the weeds. 3/

We must #DemandMore for Native women. That starts with breaking down the systemic barriers they face. We need to come together to fight for justice for #MMIW, equal access to healthcare, tribal sovereignty, and fair wages. #NativeWomensEqualPay
Part of achieving equity for Native women is addressing the wage gap. Native women had to work until today to make what white men did in all of 2018. And for every dollar a white man earns, a Native woman takes home just 58 cents. #NativeWomensEqualPay
The House took action to close the gender pay gap. While the Paycheck Fairness Act is sitting at the doorstep of Mitch McConnell, Native women aren’t getting equal pay for equal work. #NativeWomensEqualPay

* Reauthorize and expand the Violence Against Women Act to provide critical resources to women in Indian country and allow all tribes to prosecute non-Native criminals. #VAWA #TribalJurisdiction #JusticeForNativeWomen #VAWA4All #VAWA4MMIW #MMIW

Washington is failing Native communities, and it's time to fulfill our obligations to Tribal Nations. Today I’m announcing ideas to ensure that tribal sovereignty and our trust and treaty obligations are binding legal and moral principles—not just slogans.…
Funding critical programs for Indian Country isn't optional. It's required to fulfill the United States’ trust and treaty obligations. So @Deb4CongressNM and I have teamed up on writing a bill to ensure predictable, guaranteed funding to Tribal Nations and indigenous peoples.
Washington has refused to fully respect tribal sovereignty in criminal justice matters. This has deprived countless crime victims the opportunity to get justice. And it has fed the ongoing epidemic of missing and murdered indigenous women. This must change. #MMIW

I can’t read pieces denying the genocide being committed against Indigenous women on this continent. When you have family & friends who’ve gone missing & been brutally murdered & when you’re a survivor, its traumatic & it shows that a lot of people don’t see us as human. #MMIW
If it was their daughters or sisters or mothers going missing and being murdered at the rate of 1 every 12 days, #MMIWG would be acted upon immediately. There comes a point where it’s no longer gross negligence & becomes more like aiding & abetting.
#MMIW is a problem in Canada AND the U.S. One of my relatives was murdered just a few months ago. This is happening RIGHT NOW and we are not disposable. For the love of your god, have some empathy. Do what’s right. Innocent blood cries out for justice. Protect us.
