1. I just had to join the cool kids and show off my freshly released @flo_mask which arrived from California via courier today. Initial impressions are positive but I haven't even worn it outside the house yet. #Flomask Image
3. Shipping to family in New Zealand was just as speedy as shipping to Australia. International buyers should be able to purchase with confidence. But shipping from California to AU/NZ is always efficient.
3. It passes a quick fit test. Negative pressure test (filter covered with 2 hands: strong inhale—no edge leaks). Positive pressure test (coughing doesn't fog glasses worn, held at bottom/sides; can't feel air leaks at edges). Repeat with head in different positions: up/down/L/R
4. Lightweight and comfortable but I haven't worn it for longer than an hour. Breathing resistance with Pro Filter already feels remarkably low compared with any N95 mask I've worn so far. Haven't tried the Everyday Filter yet. Image
5. These are preliminary impressions only, rather than a proper review based on wearing the mask for extended periods of time. Full (independent!) review coming. Please direct your sales enquiries to @flo_mask as I've only played with this thing for an hour or so!
6. The #Flomask even harmonises well with my oversized eyeglass frames. Even my 55mm lens height frames harmonise nicely with the mask (photo shown with 50mm height frames). No issue with frames being pushed upwards and sitting at the wrong angle
7. One more thing. This mask sits higher than any mask I've tried. Elastomerics often sit so the bottom slightly undershoots the chin. To get it to fit, I had to wear it with the base sitting above my chin. Otherwise, I got leaks. Experiment with the position to get optimal fit

1. With the US hitting the grim milestone of a million official COVID deaths, it is time to pause and reflect on the lessons of 20th century history.
2. Some remain oversensitive to comparisons between COVID and the Shoah (Holocaust). But with the worldwide deaths from COVID at 15 million, that is twice the 6 million dead of the Shoah—and counting
[Aside: please note the usually excellent USHMM's position of forbidding such comparisons is considered extreme and has been criticised by leading academic authorities]

The 3M Aura (9322+ P2) N95 mask with expiration valve. Your best choice for outdoor exercise. Another mask review…🧵
I used to wear KF94 masks only for cycling but my lenses kept fogging as the loose fit is suboptimal, allowing edge leakages. Adding a knot to the ear loops reduced this by tightening the fit. I'd still constantly fight mask slippage from looseness to reduce lens fogging
KF94s are an ergonomic compromise of efficacy and comfort. They err towards the side of comfort. They are acceptable in low-risk situations, but are less than ideal if you ever find yourself thrust into a higher-risk scenario. I've stopped recommend them

The GVS N31000 Segre Folded. My new favourite disposable non-elastomeric N99 (FFP3) mask with 99.9% filtration efficiency. A review
NIOSH certified N99 mask. NIOSH certification is automatically recognised in Canada. Overseas certification is NOT recognised in Australia/NZ & this mask lacks AS/NZS 1716: 2012 or ATRG certification (work OH&S may quibble even though NIOSH certification is more rigorous).
In addition to having been independently tested for clinical filtration efficiency by CDC/NIOSH, the Segre has also been tested by Nelson Labs (who use the NIOSH saline protocol) and shown to filter to 99.9% efficiency

The problem with RCTs is that they are not valid outside of the cohort tested by the RCT. An RCT is strictly speaking valid only for the participants of the RCT. Is an RCT from 1, 50 or 100 years ago still applicable to present-day humans?
If you think RCTs are the scientific Gold Standard, then by applying the conclusions of an RCT outside of the study cohort, you are extrapolating by induction. You can't strictly do that without subjecting those outside the study population to an RCT. And so on ad infinitum
So Vinay Prasad is absolutely correct in saying that you cannot apply the conclusions of any RCT to the population outside of the RCT participants without conducting another RCT. And so on ad infinitum

There has been a lot of talk about microthrombosis (“microclots”) in #LongCOVID, along with the usual knee-jerk reactions about anticoagulation. But that may be mistaking effects for causes. A thread theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Note the author states: “We found high levels of various inflammatory molecules trapped in the persistent microclots, including clotting proteins like plasminogen, fibrinogen and Von Willebrand factor (VWF), and also Alpha-2 antiplasmin” ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P…
In the immunothrombosis world, we have known for a long time that thrombosis is an ancient form of innate immunity. Molluscs use coagulation to barricade off pathogens. In this 2011 talk, Prof Esmon says: “coagulation is part of the innate immune response” academy.isth.org/isth/2011/kyot…

1. The biomedical sciences need to look once more to physics and engineering as a model of scientific rationalism to follow. We have been led down the false path of excessive reliance on statistically-based empiricism. Of lies, damned lies and then statistics. #COVIDisAirborne
2. Bench science is, and remains, the foundation of all biomedical research. The trend in recent decades to devalue this in favour of statistical number fiddling must come to an end. A positive RCT on a drug without a sound mechanistic foundation is just a dubious statistic freak
3. The aim of biomedical scientific research is to make our laboratory bench modelling so good that the need to run RCTs—where we watch people die in the experiment—is gradually eliminated and becomes a relic of the Dark Ages
