This leaked SCOTUS opinion on #RoeVWade and its impact on Missouri has caused A LOT of fear and confusion (and rightfully so!)- particularly questions about IVF, birth control, and Emergency Contraception. So we’re here to clear some things up for Missourians. (A thread🧵)
MO has a “trigger ban” on the books that will take effect if Roe is overturned. What does this mean? Docs in MO will not be allowed to provide abortions & people seeking abortions will be forced to either flee the state to get abortions or carry a pregnancy against their will.
Just the facts: Current Missouri abortion law does NOT jeopardize #BirthControl (like IUDs), Emergency Contraception (EC or"Plan B") or fertility care (IVF), and neither do any of the bans we're currently watching in #MoLeg.
Yes, extremists won't stop at banning abortion & will continue to grab at power & control over things like birth control, EC & maybe even IVF— BUT *right now*, when Roe falls, Missourians are NOT poised to lose state access to BC, EC, or IVF when we lose state access to abortion.
So where'd this confusion come from? The introduction to a MO statute states that “life begins at conception.” This statement is WILD & NOT medically accurate & we should be outraged! BUT courts have ruled that this line is a values statement only & NOT statutory or enforceable.
The anti-abortion side thrives on disinformation, confusion & fear. The statutes are made to be intentionally confusing because they know that some people will be too scared to seek abortions or provide appropriate abortion care. But we can fight back!
When we talk about #abortion or any sexual & reproductive healthcare, it is so important that we only elevate factually accurate, unbiased, & non-stigmatizing info. Learn more from our clinician partners here:
🚨SOON: The #MoSen Committee on Appropriations will begin the hearing to address funding for Medicaid & reckless attempts by extremists to block birth control coverage for Missourians on Medicaid.
3️⃣bills will be heard today. Here’s what you should know ⬇️#CleanFRA#MoLeg
Extremists are trying to pass #SB1 & #SB2 which include language that intentionally & purposefully conflates abortion & birth control, calling them “abortion drugs.” This is dangerous disinformation.
Let’s be clear: Birth control prevents pregnancy, it doesn't end it. #CleanFRA
#SB1 and #SB2 would block birth control coverage for people on Medicaid, and as a result, jeopardize Missouri's entire Medicaid program.
We oppose this reckless legislation—and we’ll do everything we can to fight it. #HandsOffMyBC#MoLeg
🧵 Anti-abortion fake clinics, or so-called Crisis Pregnancy Centers (CPCs), 🎭 masquerade 🎭 as healthcare providers but their goal is to block people from accessing abortions by lying to them about their options, shaming & harassing them. (1/7)
Since 2006, fake clinics in MO have received direct state funding and special tax credits. Today ‼️77‼️ CPCs across the state receive tax-payer funding to deceive, harass, and shame Missourians seeking basic medical services. (2/7)
Because they are NOT medical facilities, anti-abortion fake clinics are NOT regulated. They DO NOT have to tell you the truth, keep their promises, or abide by confidentiality. People tricked into appointments w/ CPCs often leave traumatized, confused & scared. (3/7)
