Today, the #FBI released 2021 statistics on law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty—both feloniously and accidentally. Read a detailed summary of this data at go.usa.gov/xuGWB.
Seventy-three law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty last year—an increase over 2020. The largest percentage of these officers died in unprovoked attacks. The average age of the victim was 39 years old. go.usa.gov/xuGWB
Fifty-six law enforcement officers were killed accidentally while on the job in 2021. This also reflects an increase over 2020. Most of last year's accidental line-of-duty deaths occurred due to motor vehicle crashes.
The #FBI will release data about law enforcement officers who were assaulted in the line of duty later this year. In the meantime, you can visit the Bureau's Crime Data Explorer at go.usa.gov/xuGZw to learn more about line-of-duty death trends observed in 2021.
