Victoria Atkins (Conservative Justice Minister) said on @BBCNewsnight last night that they are going to "reform GDPR so that businesses find it easier to manage data".
As a software engineer of 25 years specialising in web software of exactly this kind, I have an intimate understanding of GDPR, data privacy and data security in computer systems.
GDPR is an excellent piece of legislation and should not be amended.
2/
It protects us from data theft, identity theft and from big business playing fast and loose with our private data.
Deregulation, which I read as a relaxation of standards, would put us all at risk of exploitation by big business and the nefarious.
/3
Further, any websites that are accessed by countries in the EU would still have to be GDPR compliant and organisations such as schools in the USA recognise GDPR as going further than their domestic policy and as such look to it to allow access for schools etc.
/4
Deregulation in would put us all at risk and would make it harder to sell into other countries.
Personally, I don't think even GDPR goes far enough. And having seen how little regard many organisations have for their online data protection this fills me with fear.

In 2008 the economy tanked because rich greedy bankers took irresponsible risks.
Rather than take their money the uk government made us pay for 10 years by imposing crippling austerity on us.
1/
A couple of years ago Covid arrived in the uk and found us woefully unprepared. Pandemic preparedness PPE stocks were out of date, the government were slow to respond and so by the time they did they were in a flat panic.
2/
They used this state of panic to justify shortcutting proper procedure and fast tracking their unqualified friends for huge PPE contracts despite there being numerous professional suppliers, thus transferring billions of pounds of public money to their friends.
