My mom was taken to the ED this morning after being found — eyes open but non verbal — in her apartment. Head CT clear (no evidence of stroke). The hospital is on Crisis Standards of Care. She is 95.
When hearing impaired housebound elderly stop taking meds and stop seeing HCPs (both because of COVID and because their world gets smaller), bad things happen. No stroke/TIA. Blood clots in both legs. TSH 38! Hypertensive crisis in ED. UTI. Falls over several weeks. 7 new meds!
Alert, but not oriented, at least three more days in hospital for IV antibiotics, likely unable to return home, the next stop is a rehabilitation facility. Low-fat MOW diet and lack of exercise taking its toll: HDL 33, TRIG 170, TC 283, LDL 206, (remnant 44). No prognosis yet.
