#AusVotes22 π§΅
Been thinking about the new right-wing talking point (straight out of the PMO?) that Labor voters should vote against their instincts & for the Liberal candidate in Liberal seats threatened by climate independents endorsed by @climate200 .
I call horseshit.
1/10
The argument goes that if the alleged "moderates" lose their seats, and especially if Frydenberg does, their absence in the parliamentary Liberal Party will skew to the right. Possibly to the extent that Peter Dutton (ugh) will become Leader of the Opposition.
2/10
And that's true. Dutton could well become leader if the L-NP loses and Morrison resigns & if Frydenberg's out.
But somehow, that's supposed to be Labor's problem and progressive voters are now meant to panic and do what the Libs can't & won't do.
Save the "moderates".
3/10
But that is, frankly, disingenuous bilge.
As @SimonJackman points out in this podcast, Right-wing Libs have been losing seats for years now. Howard to McKew. Mirabella to McGowan. Abbott to Steggall.
But the Libs haven't got the message: the electorate just isn't that into far-right, climate-denying ideologues, fellas.
Meanwhile, "moderates" have left, voluntarily. J. Bishop, Pyne, Brandis, O'Dwyer, Smith, Banks.
Whose fault it that? Not Labor's.
5/10
The reality of our compulsory voting system is that when a party is captured by extremist ideologues (the sort of Liberal Party that Morrison is trying to create, something I talked about below) it's not going to be able to capture the mainstream.
Now, it's really not healthy for a democratic system to have one of its two largest political blocs being unelectable. So in the short term, if the far right entirely captures the L-NP, that's definitely not fabulous. But longer term?
7/10
We're moving into fascinating territory. Maybe, we're seeing governments being dragged kicking and screaming into acknowledging that minority governments can be both productive (oh hi J. Gillard!) and more representative. They are unremarkable in much of the world.
8/10
And maybe there's room for another, new party on the centre-right, drawing from Liberal moderates and the right fringe of the ALP.
Would that be such a bad thing?
A party actually representing the values of its members?
9/10
So if you're wavering over supporting a climate independent because you're worried about what it'll do to the Liberal Party, consider this.
It's nothing the Liberal Party hasn't been doing to itself.
If you want action on climate & integrity, follow your instincts.

All of this episode of the Below the Line podcast is worth listening to (they all are), but this is particularly crucial - political scientist @SimonJackman talking about the long road to conservatism that the Liberal Party has been taking.
The Liberal Party has ignored the warning signs for years as it has shed its moderates. If the Teals demolish them in seats like Goldstein, Kooyong or Wentworth, it's part of a long process.
In the context of compulsory voting, the extremism that leads to will be fatal.
How electable will a Coalition with Dutton as the leader of the Libs and Canavan as leader of the Nats be?
This election will be decided by women. That's what the polling is telling us.
So when .@murpharoo points out the following qualities in .@AlboMP's launch today, it's crucial to see them through that prism.
Blokes feeling it was a bit meh?
It wasn't aimed at you.

"Albanese presented to voters on Sunday as a political leader who wasnβt born thinking he was owed the prime ministership. Heβs not a powerful orator; he lacks the velvety intonation and the X factor..."
2/5
"He didnβt seek to dominate the room; he sought connections in it, looking for faces, reactions, cues.
"He was modelling a different style of leadership β a style not that familiar to Australians after a succession of power players in Canberra..."

It's clear that Morrison has, by supporting Deves and having his allies in the party defend her in the media, now given up on the seats held by Liberal "moderates" that are under threat from the teal independents, including that of his own Treasurer. 1/8
Instead he's aiming for disengaged voters in marginal outer suburban seats who will pick up on the key words he's spruiking regarding trans athletes ("sport" "fairness", "common sense") and not delve into the motivation and culture wars underpinning them. 2/8
While this might look like mere tactics, it's something far deeper and more sinister. As with Morrison & Hawke's preselection manipulations in the NSW division, this is a fight for the heart of the Liberal Party. 3/8
Just a reminder about the process of voting in the Senate!
You can vote above the line if you want, marking at least 6 boxes 1, 2, 3, etc. That means you're voting for a party or group of independents.
Or you can vote below the line...
1/ 1
If you vote below the line, you're voting for individual candidates. You must vote for at least 12 candidates (1, 2, 3, etc.) You can vote in any order you like, and don't need to follow the parties' order of their candidates.
2/6
If you don't number every box after your 6 (above the line) or 12 (below the line) choices, your vote then extinguishes. This is an important change from elections prior to 2016.

Perrottet's family is deeply involved with Opus Dei.
The barrister of Dominic's brother, Jean Claude Perrottet, specifically referred to their family as "belonging to the conservative Catholic order Opus Dei" in a rape case against him.
In order to understand Morrisonβs theology and goals, itβs essential to delve into the Seven Mountains mandate β to which he, his church and a number of his key political allies subscribe.
A thread.

Scriptural authority for the βseven mountainsβ comes from Isaiah 2:2: βNow it shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the Lordβs house shall be established on the top of the mountains.β
