Palestinians are commemorating the #Nakba, a program of ethnic cleansing that saw 750,000 Palestinians forcibly displaced from their homes during Israel's creation.

Between 1947-49, Zionist forces killed 15,000 Palestinians and destroyed 500+ Palestinian villages and cities.
No Palestinians displaced by the #Nakba were allowed to return home.

Today, there are over 5 million Palestinian refugees.

1/3 live in camps, some in the occupied West Bank and Gaza, in what groups call "abysmal" conditions without regular access to water, food or electricity.
74 years after the #Nakba, Palestinians are still being forcibly displaced.

▪️ Since 2020, Israel demolished homes of over 2,500 Palestinians.
▪️ Israel has over 200 illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank, cutting Palestinians off from vital services and their own land.
Occupied Gaza has been under blockade by Israel since 2007.

Rights groups call it an "open air prison."

▪️ 56% of Palestinians there are food insecure
▪️ Israel often blocks supply of essential aid, medicine
▪️ 1,500+ homes destroyed by Israeli strikes in 2021 still not rebuilt
On #NakbaDay, Palestinians carried images of journalist #ShireenAbuAkleh, who was shot and killed by Israeli forces last week.

At her funeral on Friday, Israeli police clubbed pallbearers and ripped away Palestinian flags — Israel bans use of the flag in occupied East Jerusalem.
.@hrw and @amnesty accuse Israel of apartheid, and treating Palestinians "as an inferior racial group."

Even Palestinians with Israeli citizenship (19% of its population) are subject to "inferior status by law" — including land confiscation and being concentrated in townships.
@hrw @amnesty Palestinians make up almost 20% of Israel's citizens, but:

▪️ Are denied nationality
▪️ Concentrated in townships (3% of land)
▪️ Got just 1.7% of state COVID funding
▪️ Denied right to bring Palestinian family into Israel, while foreign spouses of Jews get automatic citizenship
Police arrested #NakbaDay protesters in Berlin gathered to commemorate the forced displacement of Palestinians 74 years ago.

German authorities banned many pro-Palestinian demonstrations in recent days, including a vigil for slain Al Jazeera journalist #ShireenAbuAkleh.

Israeli forces killed a Palestinian American Al Jazeera journalist who was wearing a press vest in the occupied West Bank.

Shireen Abu Akleh was 51.

Israeli soldiers shot her in the head during raids in Jenin, say other journalists: "They killed her in cold blood."
Israel says it is investigating the killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, who was shot by Israeli troops in the occupied West Bank.

Israel claims journalists were "armed with cameras."

Other journalists say soldiers "did not stop firing even after she collapsed."
Up to 50 Palestinian journalists have been killed in the occupied West Bank and Gaza since 2000, say media watchdogs.

Groups accuse Israel of targeting journalists with impunity. The UN found evidence Israeli snipers "shot journalists intentionally" at Gaza protests in 2018.

Jamaican leaders demanded reparations from the UK ahead of a trip by Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Colonizers enslaved 300,000+ people in Jamaica, thousands starving to death. Revolts by enslaved people there are credited with forcing the British to abolish its slave trade.
The British enslaved over 3 million African people at the height of its slave trade — 400,000 died in transit.

Jamaica was a major slave 'market,' the British profiting off slave labor for sugar while 15,000 enslaved people starved to death.

Hundreds were killed for revolting.
Britain abolished the slave trade in 1807 but did not abolish slavery itself until 1833, after rebellions including one in Jamaica led by Samuel Sharpe.

The government paid the modern equivalent of $22 billion in reparations — not to enslaved people, but to former slave owners.

The EU gave protected status to people fleeing Ukraine — but that does not apply to thousands of foreign students.

They may enter but must leave immediately.

Many from mostly India or African countries report racism at borders, being blocked from trains or being forced to pay.
Hundreds of foreign students were evacuated home after fleeing Ukraine to neighboring countries. Many refused to leave without their pets.

Some from India said they were forced to walk miles after being blocked from trains.

"The Indian embassy told us to walk, so we walked."
India called for a ceasefire in a Ukrainian city to evacuate hundreds of trapped students.

700 are trapped in Sumy and another 300 are still in Kharkiv, where strikes killed 1 Indian student. Others who managed to flee described reaching the border as a "near-death experience."

Over 1 million people have now been forced to flee Ukraine due to Russia's deadly invasion, says the UN.

Numbers may eventually reach 4 million — almost 10% of the population. The UN confirmed "instances" of racism against the almost half a million non-Ukrainians fleeing.
A Russian "bombing attack" on a residential area of Chernihiv killed at least 33 people, says Ukraine.

Wednesday marks 2 years since #AhmaudArbery was chased and murdered by 3 white men.

Travis McMichael, Greg McMichael and William Bryan avoided charges for almost 2 months after local DAs allegedly told police not to arrest them. They are now serving life in prison for murder. Image
The men who murdered #AhmaudArbery, found guilty of federal hate crimes, had pleaded not guilty to charges.

They initially planned to plead guilty in a plea deal that would have averted a trial, and which Arbery's mother said was designed "to make their time in prison easier." ImageImageImage
