1/ According to information buried at p.50 of this 83-page UN filing (undocs.org/A/HRC/49/82/AD…), the UNHRC's @AlenaDouhan—the Special Rapporteur on “the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures,” the dictators' term for Western sanctions— received $200,000 from #China.
2/ In exchange, Douhan lent the imprimatur of her United Nations Human Rights Council mandate for the most extreme forms of Chinese disinformation, including this official regime-sponsored propaganda event covering up Beijing's persecution of the Uyghurs.
3/ In December, after she took China's $200,000, @AlenaDouhan suddenly appeared at this Chinese regime event, lending U.N. legitimacy to a series of propaganda videos & speeches that covered up the herding of 1 million Uyghurs into camps, falsely portraying Xinjiang as a utopia.
4/ This was the most extreme propaganda event that the UNHRC's Douhan has performed so far in helping China get away with persecuting millions of Uyghurs, but it's hardly the first. In September, she was the lead speaker at a Chinese-sponsored event against Western sanctions:
5/ China sponsored this UN Human Rights Council event with Belarus, the Islamic Republic of Iran, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. Interestingly, Douhan works for the Lukashenko regime's Belarus State University; has already visited Venezuela and Zimbabwe; and is today in Iran.
6/ China is investing huge sums of money to corrupt Alena Douhan's UN human rights office because in March the US, EU, UK & Canada announced sanctions on China for committing genocide against the Uyghurs. They want her UN title to label sanctions a crime. verfassungsblog.de/sanctioning-th…
7/ On June 3, 2021, Douhan legitimized a third propaganda event on Western sanctions co-sponsored last year by China, together with Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Iran, Nicaragua, Russia, Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.
8/ That a UN human rights envoy is helping brutal dictators in China, Iran, Syria, Venezuela & Zimbabwe to get away with murder is appalling. That Human Rights Watch official Peggy Hicks—who goes back and forth with the UNHRC—legitimizes it is inexcusable.
Today: UNRWA chief Lazzarini in Bundestag denies he reinstated Hamas-linked school and union leader Fathi al-Sharif, decries “misinformation.”
4 days ago: UNRWA-linked site reports Lazzarini met alliance including Hamas & Islamic Jihad, agreed to “reinstate Fathi Al-Sharif.” 🧵
According to Palestinian Refugees Portal, a news site funded by an UNRWA affiliate, “the Alliance of Palestinian Forces” (which includes Hamas and Islamic Jihad) held a meeting on Monday, June 30, with UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini. /2 refugeesps.net/post/27887/%D8…
“The leadership of the coalition of Palestinian forces in Lebanon, the Islamic forces and Ansar Allah held a meeting with UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, in the presence of the Chairman of the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee, Dr. Basil Al-Hassan, and the Director of UNRWA in Lebanon, Dorothy Klaus, on Monday at the Government Palace in the capital, Beirut.” /3 alqudsnews.net/post/205379/%D…
Dear @AntonioGuterres: Acting under Article 3 of the United Nations Code of Conduct, we today filed a Complaint over financial misconduct by Francesca Albanese. We demand that you disclose all illegal payments she took since 2022, and all her expenses:
🧵 unwatch.org/wp-content/upl…
We requests that you commence an immediate and independent investigation into serious allegations that Ms. Albanese has been illegally requesting payments for work done in her official UN capacity, in gross violation of her solemn obligations under the Code of Conduct. /2
Art. 3 of the Code of Conduct prohibits Albanese from taking remuneration from “any governmental or non-governmental source” for activities in pursuit of her mandate. Albanese herself admitted she “cannot take [an] honorarium for anything she does in her official capacity.” ⤵️ /3
BREAKING: UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini in Beirut reinstates Hamas-linked principal & union leader Fatah al-Sharif in “understandings” reached with Lebanese Prime Minister, in exchange for Islamist UNRWA union factions ending months-long strike tomorrow. refugeesps.net/post/27925/%D9…
In March, under pressure from UN Watch, UNRWA chief Lazzarini suspended al-Sharif for three months without pay over his Hamas ties. Yet instead of condemning his links to a terrorist group, al-Sharif's fellow UNRWA teachers and staff backed him—and went on strike in support. /2
Contrary to UNRWA's “just a few bad apples” line on teachers' terror support, the entire UNRWA Lebanon teachers’ union—2,000 teachers—held mass strikes across Lebanon, shutting schools and services, to march on UNRWA's Beirut office to back al-Sharif. /3 unwatch.org/unrwa-teachers…
Meet Hind Khoudary. Tonight she's a star reporter for Channel 4. She's also famous for having informed on Rami Aman & other Gaza peace activists, getting Hamas to arrest them for the crime of doing a zoom with Israeli peace activists. Shame on you @Channel4 @C4Dispatches. 🧵🔽 /1
April 6, 2023: Gaza youth group founder Rami Aman holds a Zoom video call with 200 Israeli and Gaza peace activists to open a channel of communication between the two. He encourages participants to believe in peace and continue advocating for change. /2
April 8: Amnesty International’s former research consultant Hind Khoudary denounces Rami Aman in a series of vituperative posts. She tags three Hamas officials to call their attention Aman and his Zoom call. Screenshots here in this thread: /3
BREAKING: For first time, UNRWA's former general counsel James Lindsay testifying before Congress, now exposing the agency's failure to vet staff for terrorist ties. I'm sitting right next to him—it's a damning indictment from the inside like never before.
UNRWA's former general counsel James Lindsay: “It would not be surprising to learn that as many as half of UNRWA’s employees were Hamas supporters—of whom some likely would be Hamas members—which is not that different from what the Israeli government alleged.” /2
UNRWA's former general counsel: “It is simply not true that UNRWA is ‘irreplaceable.’ /3
UNRWA Got the Stimson Center to Cancel Me: Prominent DC think tank @StimsonCenter was pressured by UNRWA’s US lobbyist to disinvite me—after their @barbaraslavin1 confirmed me as a speaker—from their panel debate on Monday about allegations of UNRWA bias. unwatch.org/unrwas-dc-lobb…
UNRWA also refused to appear in a recent European Parliament hearing with me. It is shameful that a UN agency funded by all of our democracies refuses to debate with one of the only groups that has held them accountable to their own stated principles. /2
Only after I complained to Stimson Center CEO Brian Finlay did Slavin confirm that it was William Deere, UNRWA’s DC lobbyist, who had pressured her into cancelling my appearance. “You are correct that he said he would not take part in an event with you,” Slavin wrote me. /3
