The Yuma Sector is currently Arizona’s busiest Border Patrol sector. 27,343 people were detained last month attempting to enter the US. But only 1,764 of them were subject to Title 42 deportation. Why?

A vast majority of the migrants detained in Yuma are from countries that are not covered by Title 42 (think far away.)
That was 25,579 last month. These people become eligible for asylum consideration. That’s many more than the much larger Tucson Sector. #azfamily 2/
Why are these people from all over the world choosing Yuma, of all places? An easy answer would be the gaps in the border fence near Yuma. There are several of them near town. But that’s only part of it. #azfamily 3/
Another answer is more practical. One hour west of Yuma is the city of Mexicali. It has a decent-sized airport. Some migrants told me they flew from their origin countries to Mexico City or Tijuana, then to Mexicali. Yuma is close. And safe. #azfamily 4/
Since most of these people are from outside the region, Title 42 does not affect them and is not a deterrent to them. #azfamily 5/5
