๐ฆ๐บ๐ฎ๐ณ For those in India watching #AusVotes22 results & wondering about new govt & India, China, Quad etc, worth seeing remarks by Sen. Penny Wong, then shadow foreign minister, at @raisinadialogue this year 1/
2/ Also, particularly to see where Australia's China discussion is, watch the foreign policy debate a week ago between Sens. Payne & Wong
(tldr: this is not the 2007-08 Aus Labor Party)
3/ Australian PM-elect Albanese will be headed to the Quad summit & it'll be a good opportunity hopefully for not just that platform but bilats as well...
4/ A couple of months ago, new PM-elect Albanese gave a foreign policy speech at @LowyInstitute in which he talked China & also mentioned support for Quad & India ties (India came up in Q&A too + some kind words for current HC in India Barry O'Farrell) lowyinstitute.org/publications/aโฆ
5/ Albanese met w/ the Indian foreign ministers, as well as those from the other Quad members when they were in Melbourne for the last ministerial
Interesting India esp noted: "reviewed mil-to-mil engagements, info sharing, enhanced logistics cooperation, & ability of the Armed Forces to coop. closely under compatible comm arrangements. In this context, closer cooperation of Special Operation Forces came up prominently"
US readout: "the 2+2 Ministerial advanced initiatives that will allow the U.S. and Indian militaries to work more seamlessly together across all domains of potential conflictโfrom the seas to cyberspace."
US readout: "The United States and India finalized major bilateral initiatives on information-sharing, liaison exchanges, and joint service engagements to support high-end, combined operations."
Also present during Biden-Modi virtual meeting:
- US SecState Tony Blinken
- US SecDef Lloyd Austin
- Indian EAM S. Jaishankar
- Indian RM Rajnath Singh
- US NSA Jake Sullivan
- Indian ambo to US Taranjit Sandhu
2/ Biden:
- ๐บ๐ธ๐ฎ๐ณ will continue "close consultations" on ๐ท๐บ๐บ๐ฆ
- welcomes ๐ฎ๐ณ humanitarian support for ๐บ๐ฆ
- ๐บ๐ธ๐ฎ๐ณ ties growing "deeper and stronger"
3/ Modi:
- thanks Biden for taking initiative for the virtual mtg
- ๐บ๐ธ๐ฎ๐ณ progress wld hv been hard to imagine few decades ago
- worrying sit. in ๐บ๐ฆ; condemns Bucha killings
- says has suggested Putin-Zelenskyy talks
- will be sending another consignment of medicines to Ukraine
๐ฎ๐ณ๐บ Arnab Goswami leads with: "Forget abt the geopolitics at play...think abt the genocide at Bucha...where there's been a mass massacre of civilians by Russian forces...where little children hv been killed by Putin's forces...it's barbaric..& it's not fake news, Russians"
This is quite something from the primetime anchor on Indian TV, and a shift.
Arnab: "was it a genocide? no doubt about it in my view" #Bucha
2/ Meanwhile, on Aaj Tak (Hindi) channel, they're calling it a "brutal massacre." One show said Russian forces have turned Bucha into a Butcherkhana.
Note: I am not an energy specialist. I used to work on Indian energy issues & some of debate's struck me as a bit over-the-top on:
- ๐ฑ re amount of oil India is purchasing
- idea some treasure chest's opened up for India. 1/
2/ First, let's look at India's crude oil imports.
IEA: "About 60% of Russiaโs oil exports go to OECD Europe, & another 20% go to China"
For India, RUS been a minor source of imports.
From 2019-20 to Apr '21-Jan '22, โ import from
๐ท๐บ 18%
but also
๐ด๐ฒ 63%
๐บ๐ธ 38%
๐ฐ๐ผ 18%
3/ As I mentioned in another thread, as of April 2021-January 2022 figures, Russia was 9th on the list of sources of India's crude oil imports
๐งต on how several Indian interests hv been adversely affected by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Might this over time open up some opportunities for India (& for partners w India)? Perhaps but GOI's clearly been unhappy re effects
- strategic
- security
- economic
- political
1/
2/ Just listen to the Indian leadership...
Today, PM Modi: "Developments in Europe in the last few weeks have raised a question mark on the stability of the international order"
Echoes sthg he said recently re adverse impact on IO & India's economy
