One of my big influences for #Koshersoul is a book called Miriam's Kitchen.
And I'm going to bring this book up often because it shows a discrepancy between the way some ppl might view my book vs. Others (1)
Food memoir is very personal, vulnerable and raw. Cookbooks are manuals with hopefully some personal, cultural or regional context. If you don't want food memoir, don't read it. But really don't use cookbook expectations on food menoir.
*memoir (finger slip)
This is especially true for authors like myself. Miriam's Kitchen is rich and personal and weaves food into a larger discussion about three stories of Jewish American womanhood. There is a lot of background material and interwoven context.
When I write the same way people don't always "get it" because they aren't used seeing men, but especially Black men write in the same way they privilege white middle/upper class women.
So I'm held to a literal standard of "tell me about the food," where as other books can talk about romantic relationships, sexual experiences, biographical sketches, local histories and textual references
So there WILL be people who will be quick to be intolerant of discussions of identity, history, community politics and personal life journey ephemera because they want to "use" me as an author of color rather than see me and sort out my intellectual import and perspective
I've resolved to call people out but not worry about it in the long run. I'm bumpy, I'm learning, highly irregular and imperfect, but here's the deal: I don't owe certain folks the goods. I'm here to tell a story my way on my terms and that means a weaving...
So if someone else can eat, pray and love, I can do the same.
Its not "self absorbed" or "self righteous" to walk a reader through your head and invite them in to sip mental tea. It's an act of generosity to let people into a space that was generally off limits for the sake of Black safety and security. As such, a guest is a guest.
You can certainly want for better storytelling, or a cleaner presentation....I guarantee we've missed some punctuation points....or you might just not be interested, but if you're going to purchase and read a book, be sure you respect the journey you've been invited on.

I'm a #Black Gay Jew. #VotingRights are under attack, synagogues are being attacked, Nazis are here, #HBCUs being threatened, Black& #Jewish &Gay authors are seeing our books banned under false pretense.some schools will ban discussion of LGBTQ issues. We are hurting. Im hurting.
There's a difference between that sanctimonious bullshit about "victimhood," (imma tell you how to feel after making your life hell) and living under constant pressure from people who don't like you just for being who you can't help but be.
I am worried about everyone. Immigrants from Haiti and Latin America, disabled folks ignored in this COVID era, Muslim families split apart, women losing rights, equal pay and authority over their own bodies, trans ppl feeling unsafe. People are still hungry&homeless.

#WhoopiGoldberg ok. So this tweet is about dialogue...
The comment Whoopi made was myopic and uninformed at best, but its based on American not Hitler's Germany issues. To many Jews are a faith community, or assimilation into "whiteness," in America has made them "white" but...
Anti-Semitism really is about Jews as a distinct, racial group that bear in their genes dysfunction..it was coined by a racial anti-Semite. I use Anti-Jewish also to describe issues with the religious part of Jewish peoplehood, Judaism.
Jews were seen by the Nazis as a "mongrel" race because they ranged in phenotype and reflected origins as a mixed people. There were seen as imposters if similar in phenotype or invaders if not. You couldn't win.

Principal Bill Nolte tried it.
This is all you need to know:
This might be a short thread...so buckle up...
In my book The Cooking Gene. I had to deal with the legacy of cotton. I used to go picking cotton for long days. An Antebellum bale was about 400 pounds of picked cotton.
Hardscrabble poor white folks or as one author put it "Dixie's Forgotten People" didn't get the whip. Their mothers were not r*aped to humiliate them, their children&husbands. They were often deputized against Black folks&were used as a racial football to maintain planter power.
The largest forced migration of born Americans was the Domestic Slave Trade. It involved the rupture and movement of hundreds of thousands of Black men, women and children. From 1790 to 1861 a Black person could expect to be sold 2-3 times in their working life.

Oh yeah...
If you teach about us, the Jewish people in the context of the Shoah/Holocaust you have to admit:
1. White supremacy is evil and has affected the human race, the planet and the fulfillment of the American promise.
2. That America turned away Jews from sanctuary.
Cont.
3. That there is no hierarchy of religions. It is personal and private to decide to be a part of or not be a part of a religious community.
4. That Jewish peoplehood stands on its own terms not in relation to the story of Christianity.
5. That Jews had lives before our traumas.
6. That Hitler's Germany drew both on their colonial practices and racial science atrocities in Africa and Jim Crow in America along with millenia of European anti-Semitism.
7. That using nationalistic and scapegoating tropes and logical fallacies against groups is anti-American

Conservative white evangelicals are overrepresented in the voting demographics because they participate at higher rates&have easements to vote at higher rights given them by legislatures that know they will get what they want by making it all abt them.
Vote. Do not be apathetic.
17 percent of the population determines over a quarter of its election results.
And you must vote local, state and national.
