Five simple ways to stop procrastinating

πŸ‘‡πŸ§΅
Find your zone

Schedule specific tasks when specific energy is high.

Eliminate distractions

Its easier for your mind to wander when surrounded by temptation. Eliminate social media, email etc

Planning is helpful
Doing is better

Look at your tasks and prioritise actionable ones which give results

Break it down

Several small tasks are easier to complete than a large one

Be organised

Rather than random To Do lists, create clear order to reduce less decision making and maintain focus

TL/DR

Say no to procrastination

1. Find your zone
2. Eliminate distractions
3. Stop planning, start doing
4. Break down tasks
5. Be organised

Academia is notorious for being late

How to stick to a writing deadline
A thread🧡

@AcademicChatter @PhD_Genie @OpenAcademics
1. Make it hyper-specific

It's hard to meet a deadline if you don't know what or when it is. Define the exact time and deliverable

❌️ I'll finish the manuscript before next term

βœ…οΈ I'll complete a first draft of the manuscript introduction by Friday morning
2. Make it attractive

Its human nature to prioritise things that bring satisfaction. Make deadlines result in pleasurable outcomes

❌️ I need to write the meeting minutes today

βœ…οΈ I'll write the meeting minutes by midday then take a 15min walk after as a reward

Every journal has a textbox asking peer reviewers for "Confidential comments to the editor"

What should you write here?

A thread 🧡

@AcademicChatter
Issues with scope/format

Editors check papers fit the journal requirements before sending out to peer review.

If you think the paper is outside scope or a type not published by the journal, notify the editor so they can closely rereview
Ethical issues

Similarly, editors check author disclosures, COIs and study ethics prior to peer review.

If you think a COI affects study integrity or a study is not ethical, notify the editor so they can investigate.

They can all hinge on a great recommendation letter

But no one tells you how to write one

Writing a winning recommendation letter, a thread 🧡

@AcademicChatter @OpenAcademics
Confirm you're appropriate

Recommendations reflect your relationship with the applicant. Before you write, make sure they know your view this

❌️ I’ll write you a letter

βœ…οΈ I'll write you a letter but it will only comment on your clinical work. Is that ok?
Define your relationship

Specify the type and length your relationship in the letter. This shows you have the authority to make recommendations

❌️ I work with person X

βœ…οΈ I've known person X for 5 years: as their PhD supervisor from 2018-20 then mentor from 2020 to now.
