Mridangam is a percussion instrument from India of ancient origin.
In ancient Hindu sculpture, mridangam is often depicted as the instrument of choice of Hindu deities like Ganesh & Nandi, the vehicle and follower of Shivji.
It's is known as Deva Vaadyam or the musical instrument of the Gods. It is believed that a piece of rock, perhaps a meteor, in the shape of Mridanga fell from heaven at this place & Parashuram, feeling the presence of Devi, invoked her into the rock & established a temple for her
Mridanga Shaileswari temple is also considered as the birthplace of South Indian Classical dance, Kathakali.
In this temple, Goddess Sakti is present in three forms namely, Kali, Saraswati and Lakshmi.
A couple of years back, Rtd. Director-General of Police of Kerala State, Shri Alexander Jacob made public the stories of 4 robberies that happened in this temple in previous years. The estimated value of the temple idol is around 1.5 cr.
The 1st break in took place in 1979. The idol was stolen and found abandoned just a few meters away. The police couldn't reach the culprits.
A few years later, the story repeated. This time the police couldn't find the idol. T
The temple authorities went for Ashta Mangal Devprashna. On 42nd day, police received the information on an abandoned idol in TN with a note - "This idol belongs to Mridanga Saileswari Temple & we can't take it further. Please return it."
The third time, thieves planned to steal the idol via Wayanad forests. Again the police failed to nail the culprits. Once again, some anonymous call gave information about the idol and the police returned it back to the temple.
The curious Police tried to find the reason behind this stealing and leaving the idol half way through.
They understood that when people touched the idol, they lost the sense of direction and everyone stayed in a confused state of mind. So they decided to abandon it.
These days people are devastated with one broken relationship.
