As someone who knows nothing about cars, I weirdly enjoyed watching #DriveToSurvive on #Netflix, the #FormulaOne docuseries 🏎🏎🏎

I found some interesting parallels with my experiences as an #ECR.

Let me explain...

Before we get started, I acknowledge my privilege as an academic with ongoing employment.

I acknowledge many ECRs will face additional challenges I haven't covered in this thread. Feel free to add your own observations 😊

OK, "LET'S GO!" (that's an F1 rallying cry, btw!)
🏎 F1 drivers are persistent.

What's the best for ECRs way to emulate them?

Keep showing up, especially in the face of failure:

β€’ pick yourself up after disappointment
β€’ don't let negative feedback derail you
β€’ #KeepPushing (a hashtag borrowed from the #F1 world!)
🏎 F1 drivers are consistent. The schedule is demanding and they stick to it doggedly.

For ECRs this means writing to a schedule consistently. This need not be 8 hours every day, but do set a schedule.

"Writing" means:

β€’ reading
β€’ thinking
β€’ planning
β€’ drafting
β€’ editing
🏎 F1 drivers must stay on track.

It's easy for PhDs and ECRs to get "off track". This may be due to things beyond our control, but often we don't say no to other commitments which won't build our research career.

Avoid detours. Make research your #1 activity whenever you can.
🏎 F1 drivers are nothing without their car and their team.

F1 world champions are the result of a massive team effort.

Likewise, early career research isn't a solitary pursuit:

β€’ collaborate
β€’ meet other researchers IRL or on social media
β€’ join a #SUAW group
🏎 The is no room in F1 for #ImposterSyndrome. Losing faith in your ability is potentially fatal.

Being an ECR isn't life or death (hopefully), but the sooner you can abandon feeling like an imposter (or act in spite of it), the more likely you will be to stick with researching.
🏎 F1 drivers play the long game.

This is perhaps the most important quality of all.

My observation - a successful research career can be reduced to this:

Commitment and action over a long time:

β€’ chip away
β€’ stick with it
β€’ ALWAYS celebrate successes along the way
🏎 TL;DR - 6 tips that will help you succeed as an #ECR:

β€’ be consistent
β€’ be persistent
β€’ stay on track
β€’ be collaborative
β€’ dump your imposter
β€’ be patient and play the long game
