Looking forward to @SecBlinken’s speech today on US policy & posture toward #China. Led by the Communist Party & propelled by Xi Jinping’s hyper-nationalism, the PRC presents challenges unlike any we have ever faced.
Thread⬇️
There should be NO doubt from either side of the aisle that #strategiccompetition is the right framework to guide our nation’s relationship with #China.
Not because this is what we want, but because of the choices Beijing is making.
China today poses a direct challenge to the US & is a destabilizing threat to the international community across every dimension: political, economic, social, diplomatic, innovative, military...
& with an alternative & deeply disturbing model for the future world order.
We must be clear-eyed about Beijing’s intentions & actions, & calibrate our strategy accordingly.
This means unflinching support for human rights defenders, democracy activists, & civil society organizations on frontlines of the struggle for good governance & the rule of law.
Now is the time - before it is too late.
We must mobilize all US strategic, economic, & diplomatic tools for an Indo-Pacific strategy that allows us to truly confront the challenges China poses to our national & economic security. We must also engage economically in the region.
How?
1. Revitalize US leadership on the world stage
2. Restore our alliances & partnerships
3. Invest at home to sharpen our competitive edge
4.Respond to predatory economic practices
5. & above all else, ground US diplomacy in our core values & highest aspirations as a nation.
It is also crucial that we work combat all forms of digital authoritarianism — including misinformation, disinformation, propaganda, & censorship—used to subvert democratic principles & advance autocrats’ malign interests.
We've watched Ukraine risk everything to defend freedom. What are we willing to do to ensure credible deterrence for #Taiwan? To protect rights of Hong Kongers, Uyghurs & Tibetans? To confront China's malign global influence? Look forward to @SecBlinken thoughts on these issues.
