For everyone claiming that 𝘥𝘰𝘰𝘳𝘴 are the problem and/or solution. My sons school was very secure. You have to be buzzed in the front door, which has a lobby with a camera and speaker and you state why you are there. All of the other doors only opened from the inside.

You need that, in case of fire. Which is probably less likely at this point than a shooting, but that’s a whole different post.

The thing about these big heavy doors is sometimes they don’t close all the way. They don’t engage properly. OR, because people are human and therefore imperfect, someone may prop it open.

A teacher exited the building through an exit only door. The door was closed visually, but the lock was not 𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑎𝑔𝑒𝑑. Think of trying on clothes in a dressing room, when you softly close the door so it doesn’t lock you out when you go find another size.

Immediately after this, an aide in my child’s class went into the hallway to get something out of a child’s backpack. My kid walked out the classroom door, walked around her while she was facing the wall, AND WALKED OUT OF THE SCHOOL BUILDING.

I happened to be on campus that day waiting to leave for a field trip. I saw him randomly walking down the bus lane sidewalk, with no adult in sight. I grabbed him by the hand & marched him back into the school and 𝘯𝘰 𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘨.

This all occurred in less than five minutes. With multiple adults around. And an exit only door. My son WAS FOUR.

If a four year old can manage this in mere minutes, imagine what an angry 18 year old can do. Now, this school is wonderful. This was truly a perfect storm of chaos and I don’t blame them for my kid being determined to run free.

HOWEVER, this event highlights that no solution is going to be perfectly executed every time. Human error can be a life or death thing. No amount of single entries, metal detectors, school police officers, etc is going to come together perfectly every time.

This is why we need COMPREHENSIVE plans and solutions that encompass gun reform, mental health care funding, and school security. All of the pieces of the puzzle have to be present. No one is trying to take away all of your guns.

We want universal background checks. Advanced registration. Mental health screening. Training + license requirements. I personally think insurance should also be required in some way. Mental health care FUNDING. Don’t just espouse the problem as a way to detract from gun reform.

If you’re not gonna put your money where your mouth is, I don’t want to hear shit about mental health being the issue. Other countries have the same mental health issues we do without having mass shootings. If you think that’s the problem, fucking fix it. Fund programs to HELP.

Push your representatives to do so. If you want to bitch about your rights being taken away, you damn sure better be helping advocate for the other side of the coin because CHILDREN ARE DYING. They are dying because this country views weapons as little more than toys.

#guncontrol #mentalhealth #schoolsafety are all intertwined issues that need to be approached as such. We can’t have one without the others. RESPONSIBLE gun owners would have no problem obtaining guns. Anyone who doesn’t want all owners to be responsible probably shouldn’t be one
