Today is #MemorialDay. While it has become a day for BBQ's, beaches and sales, please remember the real reason for this day, and why so many have off work to observe it.
🧵
Interestingly, no one agrees where Memorial Day started. Numerous places claim it, which only proves how important we as a nation agree it is to remember our fallen.
At any rate, the name Memorial Day wasn't official until 1967, some 100+ years after the first observances.
2/
This is also not Veterans Day. While we'd argue any day is a good one to thank a Veteran for their service, and ask how they are, today is dedicated to those we've lost.
It's not a "Happy" day, either.
3/
Take some time today to think about those who died in service to our country. Attend a Memorial Day event, if possible.
Think of the families of the fallen, and those who served with them on this solemn day.
4/
We ask so much of our countrypeople who serve in uniform. Many made the ultimate sacrifice.
Today is about them and a grateful nation they gave everything to.
If the Supreme Court draft decision on Roe v. Wade becomes law, the impact on people serving in the military would be disastrous.
And some experts believe it could harm military readiness.
Consider the facts: (THREAD 🧵)
First, more than half of all states are poised to ban abortion if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. States like Texas, Georgia and Florida, which are home to hundreds of thousands of troops and military families on some of the nation’s largest military bases.
Now consider that most active duty troops and military families don’t get to choose where they are stationed — meaning that safe, legal abortion will be inaccessible to them if this decision becomes law.
A few observations, as veterans of our country’s wars:
1. The Ukrainians' incredible will to fight is the difference in this war. Our veterans of Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan dealt with training forces with unity issues. Ukrainians have no such issues.
🧵
2. Russia’s lack of a NCO corps and sustainment has led to operational chaos. Troops being lost, not knowing their mission, or running out of fuel. We see these stories all over the place.
3. Nothing is guaranteed, but Ukraine CAN win this war when all is said and done, because their will to fight and defend their homeland is more powerful than an invading Army in chaos that lacks synchronization.
Now that the war in Afghanistan is over, let's look back at right-wing lies that have been going viral.
Like with everything else, the right has been creating and spreading disinformation about Afghanistan.
Let's set the record straight -- THREAD:
Let's start with the story about the Taliban hanging someone from a helicopter. A story shared by none other than ice-storm fleeing @tedcruz. The story quickly went viral, but here's the thing, it didn't happen, and was simply an attempt to fix a flag: bbc.com/news/live/worl…
Now let's talk about the flurry of viral posts surrounding supposed military dogs left behind. ALSO DIDN'T HAPPEN. That story is a lie. While any dog being left is sad, let's not get caught up in viral disinfo designed to anger you. Here are the facts: facebook.com/MWDTSA/posts/3…
You want to know who David Perdue is? He's about as corrupt as they come, because there's only one thing he seems to care about -- how much money he can make off being a US Senator, and it's coming at a cost to our veterans and active-duty military. (1/5)
Perdue maximized profits off his investment in a defense contractor, steering billions to submarine construction projects, all while being the chair of the Senate Armed Services Subcommittee on Seapower. (2/5)
Perdue also diverted defense money to Trump's border wall. This hit Georgia hard with roughly 70K active-duty military. It's more than clear Perdue never made Georgia or our military a priority, just his bank account and allegiance to a wannabe dictator. (3/5)
He wants to know? Ok. We’ll tell him.
Military ballots are Mail-in ballots! The same ballots that he said he didn’t want counted.
(1/4)
Ballots will still be coming in from overseas, somewhere he never had the courage to personally go, for days.
(2/4)
And last we checked, Military Times had Trump LOSING the military vote to Biden. Which is probably why he wanted them blocked not only in Georgia, but in other states as well.

With just a few very tight races left in battleground states, it's clear that our program was able to help turn out thousands of military families and veterans. #VoteVetsVoteBlue#Election2020
(THREAD w/ state stats)
In Georgia, our program sent over 77K texts to military families and veterans, of which, we ID'd 12K hard Biden supporters, 5,278 of whom voted early or by mail.
In Nevada, we sent over 37K texts to military families and veterans, of which we ID'd 6,600 hard Biden supporters, 2,547 of whom voted early or by mail. #VoteVetsVoteBlue#Election2020
