Colonial officials amputated and mutilated Congolese people, including children, as punishment.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) was a colony of Belgium for 75 years, from 1885 to 1960. The first 23 years of Belgian rule were particularly brutal, as the Congo Free State was privately owned by King Leopold II of Belgium.
