The Gwangju Uprising was a popular uprising in Gwangju, South Korea, in 1980. The uprising was a response to the coup d'état of May Seventeenth that installed Chun Doo-hwan as military dictator and implemented martial law. The uprising began on May 18, 1980, when students at Chonnam National University protested the government's crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrations. The protests quickly spread to other parts of the city, and by May 20, Gwangju was in open revolt.
