I'm not convinced of this vision, I'm much less bullish on automation than ol' Jimbo. I don't think they're competent enough to automate

The thing that Jim's canny enough to get here is that not only does this system remove people's ability to live a somewhat meaningful economic life

But it's also laying the ground to strip them of the ability to even speak about what's been done to them

First dissolve your culture and its meaning, then your ability to provide a livelihood and have family, then even your ability to express your frustration about being turned into nothing

There's a reason why the policy nerds came up with UBI, not normal people. It's because some of the more far-seeing policy nerds see it as the way to perpetuate their vision, which necessarily involves obsoleting the people who most hate it, and would vote against it

This thread is not very cohesive, but at root is the idea that spirited people—chief among them the best of the trolls—have much, much better instincts about what normal people want than the people presently in charge
