#poetry The opening lines of
T. S. Eliot’s
“The Waste Land”

I. The Burial of the Dead

April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.

I don’t think his ghost will ever forgive me, but I wrote a poem called
“April’s Fool” that opens with this:
Prologue (with apologies to T. S. Eliot)

April is the cruellest month,
breeding jesters out of heroes,
crowning them with cap and bells,
filling with foolish pranks their brains.
Nothing hidden, idiocy exposed
for the waiting world to see, laughing
at the depths to which we sink.
Something it will take a very brave and crazy editor to publish,

Have you ever heard of the Greek hero Bophades?
He was one of the heroes who fought in the Trojan War. His story is similar to the story of Achilles.
When he was a child, his mother held him by the groin and dipped him in the river Styx to make him invincible in battle, just as Achilles’ mother did.
And just like Achilles, whose mother held him by the heel, he had a weak spot. But hus mother held him by the groin and that was his vulnerable spot.

A man looked across a restaurant and saw a beautiful woman. He kept stealing glances at her throughout his meal. Just as he was about to finish his dinner the woman let out a giant sneeze and a huge POP echoed throughout the dining room.
Seeing a blur, the man instinctively reached out his hand and grabbed something. It was the woman's glass eye.
Seeing her in dismay the man walked over to her, discreetly handed her the eye and let her put it back before looking back at her. Smiling, he introduced himself and asked if she was okay.

Three house pets – a golden retriever, a parakeet, and a cat – all died and went to heaven.
As he does with all the good animals, God decided to have a personal discussion with each one to see where they will stay in Heaven.
God turned to the golden retriever and said, "The Book of Life indicates you have been a very good boy. But tell me, in your own words, what are your ultimate principles? What do you believe in?"
The golden retriever said, "I believe in loyalty, companionship, and love. I have been a cherished part of my family for many years."

On Monday morning all the kids filed into class at school and they were very excited. Their weekend assignment was to sell something and then give a talk on productive salesmanship.
Sally led off, "I sold Girl Scout cookies and I made $30,” she said proudly. “My idea was to appeal to people’s civic spirit and it worked."

“Very good," said the teacher.
Jenny was next, "I sold magazines," she said. I explained to everyone that magazines would keep them up on current events and I made $45.

“Very good, Jenny," said the teacher.
