X : Thoughts about the future?
Me : A bit of context would be nice.
X : UK?
Me : Not much to go on. OK, the future is a major industrial shift as we tackle climate change and inequality to create a fairer society built on collaboration rather than conflict.
X : Really?
Me : No.
X : What do you really think?
Me : Elysium. Incredible wealth for a very few protected by automation from incredible poverty, deprivation, ghettoisation, control and in effect slavery for the rest of the population.
X : Oh
Me : Well, you voted for it. You had your chance.
X : Can't you be more positive?
Me : Sure. The future is a major industrial shift as we tackle climate change and inequality to create a fairer society built on collaboration rather than conflict.
X : Oh
Me : I'm just giving you the fantasy you want despite the odds.
X : How do we make the better future happen?
Me : Which better future? If you're not extremely wealthy then the fairer society is the better future. If you are extremely wealthy then Elysium is the better future. You need to decide which future and who has control.
X : Can't we just vote in people who give us the future we want?
Me : You've already made that choice and there is no guarantee that there will be another choice in the future.
X : Of course there will.
Me : That's an assumption that the future is like the past.
X : So, just give up the fight, accept our fate?
Me : You weren't fighting anyway. You were hoping others would fix this for you. At best you went on a few protests, delivered a few leaflets, wrote a few angry tweets ... this is how democracy is lost through inaction.
X : What's your advice?
Me : First step is you need to stop kidding yourself that you were doing something. What I suggest is pick a day and take that day to apologise to your kids for your failure as their guardian of the future. If enough people can do this, we can change.
X : Do you do this?
Me : Every year. 15th Sept. My #renewal day - ... I'm just waiting for enough people to join me. If we can't accept our own failure, if we keep hoping others will fix this for us ... we never will.
X : I'm not apologising to my kids.
Me : If you're not going to even acknowledge your own part in this then stop worrying about the future and asking me daft questions. Just enjoy the day and let the chips fall where they fall. You never know, someone may invent some technology.

"We have a choice to make"
... doing nothing is a choice. It's just not one that we will like ->
Asking the wee lad on discord what do we need to do ...

"we need money, so higher tax on rich
and not as much tax breaks
nothing good will happen on small funds" ,,, a good start. Wealth tax and redistribution will be essential for managing climate change.
next ... "heavy investment into renewables and electric cars. Trying to achieve sustainability or at least limit the damage" ... excellent suggestions, a good opening and follow through ...

X : Did you study at Cambridge?
Me : Long ago. Fitzwilliam.
X : What was it like?
Me : I only have vague memories of that time. I should never have been at university, it was far too early. I was completely unstable. Mentally, I was all over the place. A real mess ...
Me : ... but the pressure is always go from school to university then get a "better" job etc. Not sure how I would have coped back then with all the tuition fees that Students today are lumbered with. It seems horrendous, completely unfair. That's Lord Adonis' legacy.
X : If you hadn't gone to University straight away, what would you have done?
Me : I lived in a small town, no wealth and limited options to escape. I would have certainly taken the place offered to me at REME (British Army). But, it's the same with everyone, life is a path.

X : Did you see Tobias Ellwood is talking about rejoining the EU - politicshome.com/thehouse/artic…
Me : He is talking about the EEA docked to EFTA / Norway options -
X : And?
Me : It was always the sensible option. Today, for reasons of political capital / inertia it would be very difficult. In the past, it was bitterly opposed by various factions who had more interests in "winning" rather than finding the right path -
X : Brexiteers opposed?
Me : The "hard" elements from both factions opposed the Norway options / EEA docked to EFTA - ... the problem, as is often the case, was various groups didn't want to compromise. They wanted to "win" whatever the costs ...

Imperial measures ... rod, chain, perch and pole. Oh, the fun. Well, at least I won't have to order a 113g burger anymore and can say quarter pounder. What next in the Dickensian adventure of brexit opportunities from Rees-Mogg? Debtors Prison? Workhouses? Hanging? Flogging?
What bunch of idiots put this lot in charge. Oh wait, that was us.

Next time we have a chance to vote for someone with integrity who puts the many first. try going "well, that would be a nice change".
I do enjoy watching the outrage after outrage drop by the Conservatives. After the Jacob "call me Dickens" Rees-Mogg Brexit opportunities comes the Nadine "Ice, Ice baby" Dorries announcements on Online Harms - tiktok.com/@nadinedorries… ... what will tomorrow bring?

Hmmm ... £3.6bn on management consultancy over 4 years on MCF3 - theregister.com/2021/09/30/uk_… ... well, if we cut that to zero, we can easily afford the civil service fast track whilst reducing cuts and are bound to get more value for the money spent - theguardian.com/politics/2022/… ....
... as my grandmother used to explain to me, when you're balancing the household books then before cutting the basics like food, lighting and heating then remember to kick out the management consultants first. They don't do any good anyway - theconversation.com/management-con…
What happened to UK Gov? When I helped write the better for less paper back in 2010, there was a real focus on cutting wasteful IT, management consultants, daft contracts and investing in civil service. A decade later, we're seem to have gone into full reverse.

Me : Depends upon what you're talking about. I have questions over human rights. The economy is well managed though. Unless you read the media in the West.
