LIVE @UNISPAL Chair: The Committee’s activities on the Question of Palestine aim at mobilizing efforts to end the Israeli occupation, and at achieving the realization of the two State-solution and a sustainable and just peace. (1) UN Photo/Manuel Elías Chei...
2⃣Forced displacement, demolitions, settlement construction and expansion, illegal under international law and a substantial obstacle to peace, settler violence, and the blockade of Gaza are entrenching the occupation and contributing factors to recurring cycles of violence…
3⃣...affecting Palestinians and Israelis. In its recently released report, the UN Commission of Inquiry “on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel” has reached a similar conclusion.
4⃣Recently, several human rights organizations, @btselem in 🇮🇱 , @AlMezanCenter & @alhaq_org in 🇵🇸, as well as @amnesty and @hrw, concluded that those 🇮🇱 practices in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, meet the definition of the crime of apartheid.
@btselem @AlMezanCenter @alhaq_org @amnesty @hrw LIVE: Riyad Mansour of @Palestine_UN | If you look at things objectively, you'll conclude that 🇮🇱 commits apartheid. The fact that some states declare publicly they don't share [Amnesty's] conclusions, that is not based on any objective assessments but political calculations. Image
@btselem @AlMezanCenter @alhaq_org @amnesty @hrw @Palestine_UN LIVE @raad_zeid | "Like @hrw, in its report @amnesty decided not to focus on the Occupied Palestinian Territory only, but Israel as well." Image
Live @AgnesCallamard "It is absurd empirically, legally, historically to insist that Israel’s segmentation of the territories, Israel’s creation of different legal regimes, is not part of system of apartheid." Image
@AgnesCallamard (2) @AgnesCallamard "If we wanted to focus a bit more on the 1948 Israel, and there too we found acts that amount to apartheid and which is necessary to maintain the system of apartheid."
(3) "Representation of Palestinians in the Knesset is also restricted by large number of Israeli policies and laws"
(4) The @amnesty report builds on a growing body of work by Palestinian, Israeli and international NGOs, who have increasingly applied the #apartheid framework to the situation in Israel and/or the OPT.
@amnesty (5) It shows that successive Israeli governments have considered #Palestinians a demographic threat, and imposed measures to control and decrease their presence and access to land in Israel and the OPT.
@amnesty (6) It also sets out how massive seizures of Palestinian land and property, unlawful killings, forcible transfer, drastic movement restrictions, and the denial of nationality and citizenship to Palestinians are all components of a system which amounts to apartheid.
@amnesty (7) This system is maintained by violations which @amnesty found to constitute apartheid as a crime against humanity, as defined in the Rome Statute and Apartheid Convention.
@amnesty Live @AgnesCallamard "It is absolutely clear, that @amnesty was committed to look at the security issues, however in no way the security concerns can justify the apartheid system. Security is always invoked by a oppressive regimes to justify its policies." Image
@amnesty @AgnesCallamard Live @raad_zeid "One of the criticisms of Amnesty report is why does Amnesty single out Israel with this powerful report, whereas many repressive regimes would also qualify to be securitized." Image
@amnesty @AgnesCallamard @raad_zeid .@AgnesCallamard "Antisemitism kills, we need to fight it.But by levelling the accusations to human rights org/s is counterproductive. Within @amnesty look at better tools&strategy to fight antisemitism. But this doesn’t mean we will silence ourselves of what 🇮🇱 does against 🇵🇸s"
@amnesty @AgnesCallamard @raad_zeid (2) ❗️ "Censorship is not a remedy for anti-Semitism and it's not a remedy for Apartheid either. The rules-based system is under duress...(and yet) International Law needs to be applied impartially"
@amnesty @AgnesCallamard @raad_zeid Live @AgnesCallamard ❗️❗️❗️ "regime of apartheid must end and it must end now"
Live| @DIRCO_ZA Minister Dr. Naledi Pandor “The events & images the world has witnessed in the past months emerging from the Occupied Palestinian Territory evoke unpleasant memories of life under apartheid rule in South Africa.” Image
2. Having experienced apartheid in South Africa, the images of #SheikhJarrah and #Silwan & violent clashes between armed security forces & defenseless protesters, a reminiscent of events that took place in Sophiatown and District 6 between 1955 & 1965 in apartheid South Africa,
3…reminds us of the Sharpeville massacre of 1961 and the Soweto protests of 1976 that I referred to earlier. As South Africans we find semblance in our past with the Palestinian cause.
4. Minister Naledi Pandor | I recall the funeral of Shireen Abu Akleh and those scenes of her coffin being abused was so reminiscent of the burials we had to conduct under the oppression of apartheid soldiers, under apartheid.
5. Minister Naledi Pandor | The reports by Israeli NGOs followed by those such as the report of @hrw and @amnesty, are significant in raising global awareness of the conditions that Palestinians are subjected to. Discussions based on these reports are necessary ...
@hrw @amnesty 6. as they provide credence & support & overwhelming body of factual evidence presented by various reputable human rights org/s all pointing to the fact that the State of Israel is committing crimes of apartheid & prosecution against Palestinians.
@hrw @amnesty 7. Minister Naledi Pandor | The NGOs have done their part in preparing reports & bringing attention to the situation. The responsibility now rests with us as UN Member States to take the necessary action, as was eventually done by the UN with apartheid South Africa. UN Photo/Violaine Martin
@hrw @amnesty @SAMissionNY 8. As the international community, we must act on these persisting injustices that are faced by Palestinian ppl under the illegal Israeli occupation. We must emphasize IL's accountability for the suffering & inhumane conditions Palestinians have been subjected to for the past 73y
