Good morning all & OTD in 1944, Operation OVERLORD commences with a massive naval and air bombardment of German positions, concurrent with Allied paratrooper and glider landings in occupied France, as well as Allied landings on the beaches and cliffs of Normandy. #DDay
Captain "Mad Jack" Churchill wades ashore on #DDay with his 'Claymore' sword in hand, ready to face the Hun!
The Canadians played an invaluable role on #DDay which is, in a very Canadian way, modestly never mentioned - but the Canadians survived Dieppe & without the lessons learned there, likely D-Day has terrible casualties and/or fails.
Wonderful, clear, straightforward, and uplifting, message written for #DDay by then General Sir Bernard Montgomery to his Allied troops about to land in Normandy. A stark contrast of Monty, a methodical planner with drive, with our endless wars made by the 'hollow men'
Good morning all & OTD in 1944, British, Canadian and other Allied troops landing on the Gold, Juno & Sword Beaches commence their move on to Caen (here the UK 7th Armoured Div Tanks from the 4th County of London Yeomanry...Huzzah for the Yeomanry!)
As we mark the #DDay anniversary, a graphic that sets out the numbers from the Overlord invasion. Note that all of this would be useless without the logistics/supply to support the lodgment ashore, so look up the Mulberry harbours and the PLUTO 'Bambi and Dumbo' fuel lines

OTD in 1951, General Douglas MacArthur was relieved as Supreme Commander Allied Powers in Asia by President Truman.
Since MacArthur's firing, the main lesson learned by Western military leaders was 'stay in your lane' & be a "Yes Man"
During Covid, I did a plain English thread on MacArthur - starts below - his removal, and the mediocrity and torpor that followed from the felling of tall timber by the petty and jealous
Taiwan: "This essential capability on the part of the United States is dependent to a large degree upon the retention of Formosa by a friendly or a neutral power."

For China: Iran supplies cheaply a significant % of PRC energy. Worries esp for Beijing that the US deeply penetrated the Iranian leadership's decision cycle & raises obvious concerns for PLA/CMC.
For Russia: any spikes in global energy markets help the Kremlin. #Realpolitik
"Will China invade Taiwan"?
Asked when Xi is purging his military while the leadership of his allies:
- in Iran were decapitated by the US within hours
- in Venezuela reside in a US federal prison awaiting trial
- in Russia, gleefully await increased commodity prices
As I explained on @SkyNewsAust with @jaynieseal the only appropriate response to the Bondi massacre is a Commonwealth Royal Commission examining all causal aspects, from Anti-Semitism to AFP/intelligence & security failures, given Daesh terrorists had foreign jihadi ties
It is simply ridiculous - and a recipe for torpor and inevitable procedural delays - to attempt to have a State Royal Commission that is seeking to review the activities of Federal departments and agences such as the AFP, Border Force, Home Affairs, and intelligence service
The internal Richardson review can be as above board and arms length as ideally possible - and yet it will still look like Canberra's "usual suspects" marking their own homework after what was a murderous terrorist attack in Bondi
Perhaps it is sympathy with Roman Law systems but I have no issue with national ID cards. The problem that first world countries have though is that they cannot speedily deport people who have no entitlement to remain. Eventually, visa issuance will have to be further restricted.
I tire of libertarian arguments about national ID cards - identity fraud is costly & rampant & the State knows a lot about you as it is & if anything combining that data into one repository makes it easier for you to protect your privacy, such as it remains...
One of the reasons though the UK Govt like most Western Govts will not be trusted on national ID cards by a significant % of Britons is successive Govt's inability (even with Schengen optout) to secure borders, reduce immigration & remove people who have no right to be in the UK
Good morning all & OTD in 1916, the Battle of the Somme commenced, in which British Empire armies would suffer approximately 20,000 KIA on this first day alone. Prime Minister HH Asquith's own son would be killed & (future PM) Harold Macmillan would be wounded in the campaign
At the time of the Somme, my great uncles were in the Honourable Artillery Company and the Royal Garrison Artillery. At least one older uncle had served in the Boer War as well. Hello to all the Gunners here btw, always necessary, if difficult and obsessive by nature, people.
"But still a hope I kept that were we there going over, I, in the line, I should not fail, but take recover, From others’ courage, and not as coward be known" ~ Ivor Gurney, poet, soldier, Gloucestershire Regiment
Small thread on Iran & its national security structures/history in somewhat plainish English and to correct some errors spreading in this online environment. It is intended to be informative but not exhaustive of the subject matter.
As anyone who has dealt with the Iranian state in any capacity esp military knows, it has many layers & (yes) satrapies that often feud & work at cross purposes … the Iranian armed forces (Artesh) operate relatively normally if persistently when ivo Iranian terroritories/seas
However, the Artesh was very much the Shah's armed forces so in 1979 when Islamists took over & there was a real (or perhaps false flag) attempted Artesh coup against Khomeini's regime in early 1980 ... the distrust caused the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to form/solidify
