Since the evening of June 6th, I have struggled to find the right words to express, on behalf of our city, the magnitude of what happened to the Afzaal family, #OurLondonFamily. #ldnont
One year later, I remain at a loss on how to properly communicate the depths of our anger, our sadness, and terror.

Make no mistake, words do matter. They can provide comfort, encouragement, and hope.
Ultimately, however, words are nowhere near as important, nor as impactful, as action — especially one year later.
How do we ensure well meaning expressions are translated into meaningful action?  What do we do when the speeches end, and how do we as a community, as Londoners, support each other?
Over the last 12 months, we have witnessed countless examples from ordinary Londoners doing extraordinary things. Most recently on Sunday, as young people organized a powerful march against Islamophobia, demonstrating exceptional leadership in the process. #ldnont
Similarly, I applaud individuals and local workplaces, institutions, and places of worship for efforts they have undertaken over the last 365 days. I am also encouraged by decisive action taken by London City Council, and city staff.
Our work, both individually and as a community, remains unfinished.
On this anniversary of our city’s darkest hour, I challenge all Londoners not to become complacent. We cannot allow our progress to be measured only on this day, once every year. Rather, our progress must be measured every day, and moment-to-moment. #ldnont
It demands sacrifice, both individually and collectively. That sacrifice may come in the form of time; time spent learning and understanding more about each other.
It will absolutely require sacrificing comfort; the kind we afford ourselves when an ignorant remark is casually ignored at the dinner table, in a group text, or public setting.
Through these sacrifices, and so much more, we commit ourselves to the collective action required to build an even more loving, and more peaceful London.
Ours will become a community where all people may walk together with hearts as pure, and souls as peaceful as those of Salman Afzaal, Madiha Salman, Yumna Afzaal, Talat Afzaal, and Fayez Afzaal.
While we will always remember what happened on June 6th, we must never forget why it happened, and to whom it happened.

Our London Family.

London is fortunate to have a proud, and vibrant Chinese community in our city. The outpouring of support we’ve seen in response, from Londoners of all backgrounds, is a testament to that. And, I believe, a far better reflection of the values this city truly represents. #ldnont
We have been in contact with LPS and the Downtown BIA to discuss the content of the sign and although the numerous messages are divisive and offensive to members of the community, they do not meet any threshold for criminal charges to be issued. #ldnont
There’ve also been allegations of members of the Asian community being refused service. The issue of the sign content (which has been changed at least three times) as well as the refusal of service allegation is actively being reviewed by LPS along with regulatory agencies.

Today is an exceptionally difficult day for many in #LdnOnt, and across Ontario. I know so many individuals, and so many businesses have made so many sacrifices, and yet, here we are, about to enter a second Ontario-wide lockdown.
There is no real positive spin one can attempt under these circumstances. As I've said before, individuals and businesses who are not responsible for mass spread of the virus are bearing the brunt of consequences for those who are. #ldnont
That said, I have great respect, appreciation, and empathy for Premier Ford's position. It's an impossible one. We all see the numbers, both locally and provincially, and everybody can acknowledge they're going the wrong way. #ldnont

This is an extremely precarious time for our community, & we find ourselves at a cross-roads of sorts in our efforts to contain COVID19. The virus doesn’t care about all the good work we’ve done together over the last 6 months. All of that can be undone in a matter of days. (1/9)
Whether that happens is entirely up to us. A majority of people are following the rules, protecting themselves, and being considerate of others. That said, a majority simply isn’t good enough. Not during a pandemic, & especially not when we consider what’s at stake. (2/9)
We need more of us to do better. That includes a handful of students and young people, yes, but it also includes a handful of businesses, and other individuals. This is on all of us. (3/9)
