Moving from spinning disk to all-flash is a lot like moving from internal combustion to electric vehicles. It’s simpler, cheaper, more flexible, and greener. And a little creative thinking goes a long way! /1
It’s as easy to swap out an ICE engine for electric/batteries in a conventional vehicle as it is to toss disks and use SSD in a storage array. But this really misses the opportunities of these technologies. /2
Really taking advantage of electrification in vehicles or all-flash storage requires a re-thought integrated design focused on customer needs. And a lot of the design is in user experience not just architecture. /3
A Tesla isn’t just an “electric car” it’s an electrified transportation solution, and the Supercharger network and connected capabilities are as much a part of the Tesla user experience as the motors and batteries. Maybe more. /4
This is what so many other carmakers miss when trying to compete with Tesla: My BMW i3 is a pure and innovative electric car, but it’s no Tesla because there is no support for the electric driving experience. Same for most other electric cars on the market today. /5
All-flash storage is just as innovative potentially as battery-electric vehicle technology but it requires a re-think of the whole infrastructure stack. That’s what @PureStorage did 10 years ago with #FlashArray and 5 years ago with #FlashBlade. #PureAccelerate /6
@PureStorage The new #FlashBlade really reminds me of a Tesla in that it combines proprietary hardware with smart software to make the most of #flash technology. @PureStorage really is the Tesla of enterprise storage. /7
The new @PureStorage#FlashBlade S breaks up the blade, using the same flash modules as #FlashArray in a larger chassis. 10 blades & 4 drives per blade means more flexibility for initial configuration and growth. And improves service and availability. purestorage.com/company/newsro… /8
I’m not sure if @PureStorage#FlashBlade is really #disaggregated but it breaks the strict link between CPU and capacity on the blades, bringing a much more flexible solution for a broader market. QLC makes it cheaper and #Purity OS makes better use of QLC than generic SSDs. /9
