In this panel, Frederica highlighted ways colonialism and imperialism show up in the global
fashion industry. She identified the following points:
✅ In the workplace, it is rare to see black professionals in c-suite and board positions in the fashion industry;
✅ In education, there is a lack of representation of people of colour that is heavily reflected in the
curriculums of fashion schools and academic posts, in particular, positions such as course directors, deans and pro-vice chancellors;
✅ We still witness the issue of low media equity as it concerns people of colour; and
✅ In research, it is still challenging for black
authors to get published, which in turn leads to a lack of representation that aids the subconscious belief that African fashion scholars cannot possibly be knowledgeable enough to lead discussions in the fashion industry.
While these are some of the areas she discussed, there
are still many more. In wrapping up her conversation, she emphasised the need for there to be a shift from having conversations to taking more action.
