Some tips for #MyObi organizers focusing on the north:

1. The north is not monolithic, try to suspend stereotypes - not speaking English does not mean uneducated.
Don’t make divisions worse by acting on tropes
2. Audience mapping & segmentation is key: speak to needs, fears & aspirations e.g., 2 of 7 states with highest number of female led business are Bauchi & Gombe @FATEFoundation what will Obi do to improve business environment?
3. Door to door campaigns are great, use them to build visibility for Obi & Labour Party Logo & to sign up more volunteers. build a data base of volunteers who will eventually be party agents across 170k+ PUs.
4. Pay attention to influencers: peer influence is potent & religious and traditional authorities hold sway if you can get them to buy in
5. Don’t be put off by naysayers & don’t ignore ANY state regardless of how impenetrable the states/communities seem. Put in the work by listening carefully & engaging honestly.
6. Create cells to share lessons e.g.’ what messages are resonating (& where) and also what has backfired. Remember though that the audiences have different needs, fears & aspirations
7. In 2019 Kaduna had more registered voters than Rivers yet we keep hearing ‘The states needed to win are Lagos, Kano & Rivers.’

Katsina & Rivers are peers at about 3.2M registered voters.

Gist: examine popular narratives/beliefs about elections/politics
8. Start selling Labour sak…we don’t need a president without allies in the states and legislature

Executive Orders are not law: FAITH OKAFOR V. GOV LAGOS STATE & ANOR. (2016) LPELR-41066 (CA). Governor issued a directive restricting the movement of citizens & residents during monthly environmental sanitation.
Court of Appeal unanimously held that Faith Okafor could not be arrested or prosecuted for disobeying or flouting the Executive Order or Directive of the Governor because the Appellant could only be arrested & prosecuted for an offence that is prescribed in a written law.
In his concurring judgment, BIOBELE , J.C.A. said:
"It is my view, that democracy thrives more on obeying & promoting the rule of law rather than the whims & caprices of the leaders against the lead.

Quality Education is key. A short thread

The British felt education in the South had made Nigerians impatient of any control & gave them ‘an unjustified assumption of self importance’ & did not want that for the North.
So in addition to restricting christian missionaries (who typically came w/Edu) to Middle Belt, when the colonial admin finally introduced an edu system of its own into the North, that system was aimed at sons of pre-colonial aristocracy & its main objective was social control.
The British even declined an offer to build an ‘Islamiyya school in Northern Nigeria after the fashion of Gordon College Khartoum’. This had the blessing of the emirate aristocracy who ‘had a stake in maintaining an ignorant & superstitious populace…’

We need to organize! Especially in West Africa where closing civic spaces, oppression, weak economies, toxic politics, high inequality & trade policies impact on our lives & reduce the enjoyment of our rights - we need to organize & successful organizing takes time & skills
What is organizing?

From the Marshall Ganz Model:

1. Organizing is working with people to interpret why they should act to change their world (motivation) and how they can act to change it (strategy)
2. Organizing motivates action by deepening people’s understanding of who they are, what they want & why.

3. Organizing harnesses feelings of anger, courage, hopefulness, self-worth, community & urgency & challenge feelings of fear, despair, self-doubt, isolation & apathy

Priority areas #3:

Collation is marred by inconsistent numbers & lack of transparency - Amend EA for full results transparency I.e., results sheets scanned & published by the time final results are announced

We need a national conversation about what type of elections we want, what type of EMB & the standards that EMB will be held to. This postponement cost political parties & INEC (tax payers) at least N49.B
No ifs or buts, postponement by @inecnigeria should have been earlier.
After elections, political parties & CSOs should consider suing INEC for costs & maybe citizens will file a class action suit. INEC must be more deliberate about its planning. Last minutes postponements are not acceptable.
We need strict protocols that allows for outside readiness assessment at least 2 weeks before elections & if INEC is not, the trigger for postponement happens. Our experience means we cannot rely on INEC’s self assessment of preparedness. It’s costing us too much
