We’re here with thread 2 on how to #AceTheMains in the #UPSC exam. #Upscprelims2022 was a means to filter out aspirants, the marks aren’t counted once one qualifies. The real game which determines your rank is the Mains stage with 1750 marks. How to write a great answer? A thread:
1. Read the question. Sounds basic? You’ll be surprised at how many misread the question, fail to read all parts of it or just don’t understand what is asked. Read it twice & keep circling back to it while writing your answer. Be relevant & answer what is asked. Not many do that.
2. Your best guide, again? The #UPSC syllabus copy! Write down a simple 3 line definition of every topic & add them to your notes. This will greatly help in giving an introduction quickly in any answer, rather than wasting time thinking during the exam. Time is scarce & precious.
3. How to write a good introduction? You may include a definition,a fact,a quote: anything that is relevant, yet catches their attention & entices the reader to read further. Compile a list of quotes, facts in every sub-topic(We have a surprise in store for you’ll on this-SOON).
3. What to write in the body?Answer as per the sub-topics in the question,in the same order. Read the Q & derive your sub-headings from it. You don’t have to come up with great sub-headings,time is scarce.Stick to answering exactly what is asked. Ensure that you cover all facets.
4. Ingredients to add to a good answer?Include pie-charts,flow-charts,tables when asked to state differences or draw a comparison, draw graphs showing increase/decrease/growth in variables(especially useful in economics). But the trick?Relevance.Know when & where to include what.
5. What to write in the conclusion? Keep it short & simple. Show optimism in your attitude while stating what is the way forward. Be balanced- don’t show a predilection towards extreme view points & don’t be impractical in giving solutions. The trick? Think like a civil servant.
These were just a few ingredients on how to #AceTheMains. Want to know more? Today @vinaygb Sir will be having a session at #InsightsIAS #Delhi at 5:30pm. Come join us! We will continue this series on Saturday with Thread 3 on how to #AceTheMains.

What is the most important trait to succeed at any task in life? Is it hard-work,talent or luck? You can increase your chances of cracking the #UPSC exam or any task by learning & unlearning things constantly. Here’s a list of few traits that will help one succeed faster.A thread
1. CLARITY : Be clear about your goal. Know ‘WHY’ you want to pursue something. Introspect your reasons & intent for undertaking a task. Do it because YOU want to. Work with an end goal in mind. Be clear, the rest will follow.

“Clarity affords focus."-Thomas Leonard.
2. PLAN:Make a plan with practical targets & stick to it.Break down each task into smaller micro-targets.This ensures that you don’t get overwhelmed by the big task ahead of you.

“In the middle of difficulty, lies opportunity.”-Einstein

Develop an attitude of fearlessness.Treat every setback as an opportunity to learn & grow. If you have failed to clear the #UPSC exam or missed accomplishing any other goal, don’t get disheartened. Instead, learn from it!
Troubles are like tests: life may throw puzzling questions & situations at you in order to stress you out,but you must face them boldly & conquer them. By doing this, you will pass the test & get promoted to a better & bigger version of yourself. Face every test in life bravely.

Now that #UPSCPrelims2022 is done & dusted,it’s time to head back into the preparation mode with renewed vigour after a well-deserved break.Irrespective of the cut-offs, if you’re giving this or the next #UPSC attempt,it’s time to prepare for Mains. How to ace the mains?Thread 1:
1. Read the #UPSC notification. Didn’t expect that, did you? They clearly mention the demand of the exam. “The main exam is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates rather than merely the range of their information and memory.”
2. Approach to Study? “The questions are likely to test the candidate’s basic understanding of all relevant issues, and ability to analyse.” Focus on understanding an issue in all its facets, the context behind it, & know how to interlink & analyse it from multiple dimensions.

Have you got into the habit of delaying your happiness? As a #UPSC aspirant or even otherwise in life,we tend to believe that only when we accomplish a task,we’re entitled to feel happy.“If I clear #UPSCPrelims2022 or get X job, only then I can be happy.”Why do we delay it?A thread
Is happiness dependent on external factors? When we make our happiness contingent on getting that job, rank, salary or relationship-we are ensuring that we will never be in a state of happiness permanently. Why? Coz we will always want more-the next promotion,a bigger car, more money.
Don’t allow yourself to be dictated by the ‘ifs’, ‘whens’ or ‘buts’ in life or wait for an outcome in the future to be happy.Aspirants pin all their hopes on the #upscresult every year, delaying their happiness constantly. While we wait for an outcome, life continues to pass us by.

Sometimes in life, we feel afraid that we’re falling behind. Especially for #UPSC aspirants who have been in the cycle for quite a long time-the stress of being unemployed, the uncertainty associated with the exam & being economically dependent on others can be painful. A thread:
Watching our peers, who may have chosen other career paths progress professionally, enjoy a social life, etc. can make us feel like we’re falling behind in life. What is the antidote to feeling this way? We must stop comparing ourselves with others. We are all different & unique.
We all make different choices in life & traverse different paths. Life is neither a race nor a competition. We are the architects of our future-designing & building our own unique masterpieces. There is no one best way to live life, there are no right or wrong choices in a career.

Yesterday,we read the heartbreaking news about the aspirant who decided to end his life coz he couldn’t clear #UPSC. For those of you facing multiple failures in the exam or in any other sphere in life, please remember an exam doesn’t define your identity or self-worth.A thread
An exam is just a task we undertake in order to progress to the next grade or to get a job. It is not bigger than you or your life. It never will be. Do not base your self-worth on clearing #UPSC. Failing to clear it does not make one ‘useless’. It is just one avenue of service.
Repeated failures at anything can indeed be painful. But carry an attitude of detachment,do not let an outcome shatter you. If you do not accomplish one task, remember that there are thousands more that you have already accomplished & will accomplish in future. Focus on the good.
