1/ The emissary from #NaziRussia

"The rabble of Gondor and its deluded allies shall withdraw at once beyond the Anduin, first taking oaths never again to to assail Sauron the Great in arms, open or secret. All lands east of Anduin shall be Sauron's for ever, solely."
2/ West of the Anduin as far as the Misty Mountains and the Gap of Rohan shall be tributary to Mordor, and men there shall bear no weapons, but shall have leave to govern their own affairs..."

3/ One might say that it is absurd to compare Putin with a fictional character, but had governments and analysts in the West modelled his character on that of Sauron or Morgoth his actions in power would have been very unsurprising.
4/ Like Morgoth Putin is driven by bitter resentment. Like Morgoth and Sauron he cannot imagine people acting for the good of others. Like both Tolkien's villans he is a coward who craves domination while hiding in an impregnable fortress.
5/ Like Morgoth and Sauron, Putin sees humans only in terms of how they can be manipulated, intimidated, destroyed and enslaved. He will appeal to their best instincts, but only to deceive and ruin them.
6/ It's of course the Ukrainians who started the practice of referring to Russia as Mordor and its soldiers as orcs. And from where the Ukrainians stand, that is entirely justified.

1/ In Blair's day political commentators were getting in a tizz over 'spin'. Brexit & Trump brought in something new and vastly more dangerous - the politics of the big Goebbelsian lie. We see it with Johnson, and Davis' 'Remainer Brexit' and we see it with Putin and Lavrov.
2/ Hannah Arendt, one of the foremost analysts of the rise of Nazism warned that lies destroy democracy. The political right today is dominated by kleptofascism - kleptocrats and their political and journalistic minions using fascist themes and techniques to seize and hold power. Image
3/ While those who had lived through the Nazi epoch were still active at the summit of politics it was impossible for the kleptofascist right to use the tactic of the big lie because it would have been immediately called out for what it is, namely a Nazi propaganda technique.

1/ Russia is the perfect example of a kleptofascist state. It is a hideous combination of criminal kleptocracy, and fascist hate, lies, tyranny, rabid nationalism, and brutal military aggression.

But make no mistake, the forces of kleptofascism are hard at work in the West.
2/ It is no accident that the super-rich libertarians and their political and media minions have allied with the fascists and bigots. The libertarians know that no democracy will give them their ultra-free market paradise. So their goal is to destroy democracy.
3/ The kleptocrats and their minions don't intend anything as old fashioned as a military coup. They want to follow the path laid down by Putin and Orban, of hollowing out democracy from the inside until all that is left is an empty shell, all form and no substance.

Not for one second since the referendum has Labour opposed Brexit. That failure has left the debate dominated by Brexiters, and even so, Brexit lost majority support as early as 2017, and has become gradually more unpopular ever since then.
The question that might be asked is how would support for Brexit have gone, and how would it go, if every TV debate about Brexit had to pit a Brexiter against a pro-European, rather than presenting two Brexiters? Would that have made, and would it make Brexit more popular?
It is extraordinary when you think of it that, with the two main parties backing Brexit, it has become so unpopular, and perhaps even more extraordinary that in the light of all the evidence to the contrary it is still regarded as politically invincible.

I follow about 37k people, I'd guess about 90% are Remainers. When I look at their latest tweets there is hardly anything about Ukraine.

This is disastrous. It betrays the Ukrainian people. It helps Putin and the enemies of democracy.

Why are so many people so blind?
The collective failure of Remainers to offer effective support to Ukraine on Twitter speaks of the depressing parochialism which dominates British political culture. We, for the most part, seem to have learnt nothing from the catastrophic 1938 betrayal of Czechoslovakia.
Be assured, if Putin can claim victory in Ukraine the consequences for democracy will be catastrophic. Democracy will have shown itself to be politically incapable of defending itself. Aggression will have been rewarded and the enemies of democracy emboldened.

1/ There is still far too little support for Ukraine from Remainers and UK opposition folk on Twitter. We and the Ukrainians share a common struggle to defend democracy. But they are putting their lives on the line and we are campaigning in safety.

2/ If Putin can claim victory in Ukraine then the forces opposed to democracy will receive a massive boost. If he is soundly beaten then democracy will have delivered a mighty blow against its enemies. The struggle for democracy must know no borders. Ukraine is the frontline.
3/ Putin is counting on the Western public to lose interest in Ukraine, knowing that Western politicians will follow public opinion.

We must not serve Putin by being quiet about Ukraine.

Ukraine's struggle is our struggle.

- @Kasparov63 writes:

"The point of modern propaganda isn't only to misinform or push an agenda. It is to exhaust your critical thinking, to annihilate truth."

Putin, Trump and Johnson all employ this tactic. It is as if they have been reading the same propaganda manual.
If you annihilate truth then you destroy people's power to make reasoned political judgements. You create uncertainty, distrust, anger and apathy. You drive people into the crude emotional politics of fear, hate, tribalism & the craving for a strong leader. You destroy democracy
A feature of Putin, Trump and Johnson's rhetorical strategies is the sheer volume of incoherent nonsense they pump out. It's designed to leave critics and commentators floundering helplessly as they chase frantically from one lie to the next.
