I had a chance to go to this @VSOrchestra Orpheum Theatre built after the Spanish Flu to be *pandemic proof* and WOW. This ventilating system is FULLY OPERATIONAL. Huge crowd 1/n
@VSOrchestra And under the seats there were these mushroom shaped objects...Fresh air from pipes provided a very gentle stream of air & note these air intakes were protected by the mushroom design. the stem emitted air, the umbrella part protected it 2/n
@VSOrchestra The air rose above the seats to the porous false ceiling above to vent all that air out! This was built in 1927 & it has better ventilation than most modern buildings #PandemicProof architecture 3/n
@VSOrchestra This ventilation system is fully operational. I estimated 1700 in that theatre! We need this 100 year old #PandemicProof design that was demanded by the public so wary of death from #SpanishFlu . They were ready for #covid19bc! Are we?
If there was a way out of our #covid19bc pandemic, here it is, a design from 100 years ago from the people who knew #SpanishFlu was airborne. Here is the article below that made me curious to go to the Orpheum with my aranet4
And a word of caution...so far the CO2 readings are showing great ventilation for 1700 people at <600 ppm and 1200ppm for 3000 people. I would love to gather more data on this! Have a look at Daryl's experience:
1200ppm is actually the CO2 levels at my home where I live with 3 other humans & a kitty. This level for 3000 people is still extraordinary but that means full capacity concerts might need a #maskmandate
...CO2 in my house right now with 3 humans inside & a kitty
" we show that displacement ventilation, ...where air is drawn in through lower-level inlets & extracted at high level, can significantly reduce the spread of airborne contagion, and save the lives of healthcare workers, carers & patient " 1/3 #covid19bcroyalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs…
"In mixing ventilation, the occupant is surrounded by mixed air of uniform properties, such as the concentration of a contaminant—a bit like lying in dirty bath water. By contrast..." 2/3
" in displacement ventilation the occupant is surrounded by newly arrived air, and pollutants generated near or by the person are lifted towards the ceiling by the rising warm air—rather like being in an inverted shower and rinsed with clean water. " 3/4
...from the same paper, an illustration of how displacement ventilation can be used in healthcare 4/4
If #H5N1 started spreading ,we could potentially transmit to our cats " Michigan health officials suspected that owners may have inadvertently spread bird flu to their household cats, raising new concerns about transmission patterns of the virus." 1/ newsweek.com/cat-owners-inf…
It's happened before, here is a case study of #H1N1 influenza in 2 cats who died after being exposed to humans & be warned, there are pathology photos in this report 2/
I requested exemption to jury duty due to hardship: risk of covid19 & underlying condition, asthma . I stated that current cases are high & likely to get higher during respiratory season. 1/
I requested that the court have a CO2 level of <700ppm &demonstrate adequate ventilation & filtration & i will bring a CO2 monitor to the jury selection day . I said that if #ventilation & #filtration are adequate, I will be pleased to serve on the #jury of the Supreme Court 2/
By accepting my request, the BC Supreme Court is acknowledging the risk of exposure to covid19 in the court & also they are protecting the participants of the court from exposure by allowing people to be excused. Interesting 3/
"Whooping cough is caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis, which had plummeted to record lows during the COVID-19 pandemic, likely due to more people at the time wearing masks " 1/
" We believe one of the driving factors and one of the largest contributors is waning protection from acellular pertussis vaccines," Skoff said." 2/
"In the setting of waning immunity and we are seeing more and older individuals and oftentimes I'll hear from clinicians, we don't think about pertussis in older individuals or they come to healthcare much later when some of the diagnostic tests aren't accurate," Skoff said."/3
" In May 2017 a patient attended the emergency dept at a hospital in England, with a presumed allergic reaction. He was subsequently diagnosed with #Measles . There were 7 further confirmed cases, five of whom had received two doses of #MMR vaccine." 1/ sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
"a 25 year old male...presented with a 1 day history of a rash on his face with accompanying facial pain, diarrhoea and epigastric tenderness. He was found to be lymphopenic. He
had visited his...physician the day before feeling generally unwell and with a facial rash." 2/
"The rash was first noticed after he had taken ...medicine containing paracetamol, promethazine Hydrochloride, &dextromethorphan hydrobromide, for symptom relief the day before. A presumed allergic reaction was diagnosed, for which he was prescribed prednisolone " 3/
Why do mask mandates matter? Because source control matters! Check out this research 1/
" All masks and respirators significantly reduced exhaled viral load, *without fit tests or training* . A duckbill N95 reduced exhaled viral load by 98% ..."
..." We compared efficacy of masks (cloth &surgical) &respirators (KN95 &N95)as source control for SARS-CoV-2 viral load in exhaled breath of volunteers with COVID19. Volunteers provided paired unmasked and masked breath samples allowing computation of source-control factors" /2
"Findings: All masks and respirators significantly reduced exhaled viral load, without fit tests or training. A duckbill N95 reduced exhaled viral load by 98% &significantly outperformed a KN95 as well as cloth and surgical masks" /3
