Since it's #FathersDay, let's celebrate Black fathers by countering racist narratives of Black men’s involvement in their children's lives and exploring where some of it comes from. (1/14) 🧵
Black fathers are routinely framed as being absent in the lives of their children, and I was tryna figure out where this came from, which led me to the Moynihan Report (2/14)
The report, which was released in 1965, was from the Office of Policy Planning and Research under the Department of Labor. Written by Daniel Moynihan (3/14)
It argues that the problems of the black community are from absent fathers, and quite literally, the lack of a patriarchal household. Not structural oppression, not discrimination. Also, black men not being masculine enough (4/14)
It was written by the government during the civil rights movement, so its about as terrible as you might expect (5/14)
The report described children born out of wedlock as “illegitimate”, while stating that matriarchal qualities of black households existed due to the failures of black men. (6/14)
Being married doesn’t make you a good father any more than not being married makes you a bad one. Even though this report was 50 years ago, the perception of absent black fathers continues to persist, while leaning on this sort of logic (7/14)
Despite all the obstacles Black men navigate, Black men set the bar high for being good fathers (8/14)
According to a CDC study that measured paternal involvement in child rearing, Black fathers were found to be the most involved (9/14)
Of nonresidential fathers, Black men are more likely (67%) to see their kids at least once a month or more when compared to white (59%) and Hispanic fathers (32%) (10/14)
Even though Black men are more likely to be nonresidential fathers, that does not mean that they are uninvolved, which is how Black men have been framed (11/14)
African American fathers are “more likely to remain in regular contact with their children even after entering into relationships with new partners and having children with them.” (12/14)
Black men have been able to adapt to systemic obstacles like mass incarceration and discrimination to continue to remain an active part of their children's lives, while in many cases, serving the role of a social father as well (13/14)
Just wanted to share a little piece of my day to let brothers know they are appreciated. I know we don't always feel the love, so Happy Fathers Day to all the Black fathers out there! (14/14)

Here is a primer on #BlackMaleStudies (BMS), what it means, key scholars, key terms, and major points. Anti-black misandry is so prevalent in the response to BMS so I'm going to take the time to be very clear about what it is (1/19)🧵
“Black male studies is an interdisciplinary field dedicated to exploring the various developmental trajectories and the vulnerabilities (racial, sexual, economic) of Black men and boys in the United States and abroad.” (2/19)
Although @DrTJC is BMS most prominent scholar, it has been around for awhile. Richard Majors, 1992’s ‘Cool Pose’ is seen as a marker of the beginning of BMS for some, but Black men have been studied by Black men far longer than that(3/19)

There is a lot of talk about the overlap between incels and white supremacists, but the alt-right has a growing group that doesn’t get a lot of attention. Let me introduce you to Divestors, Black women who represent a gendered fascism. It's a wild thread. Buckle up🧵 (1/25)
Before I get into it, let me define what the alt-right is, just so we are clear. Here are a few definitions (2/25)
“Alt-right adherents identify with a range of different ideologies, all of which center on white identity.”
Anti-defamation League (3/25)

From everything we know about the Black Panther Party (BPP), they would have supported Trans rights, so if you can't understand from an LGBTQ perspective, you should understand it from a Black Liberation one. 🧵(1/16)
The BPP was the most “influential revolutionary organization” in the United States when it was active according to renowned sociologist George Katsiaficas. It's a reason why they remain the standard over 50 years later (2/16)
Terms such as "power" “Revolution” and “Power to the people” were not often made without some reference to the Panthers, as they were vanguard for analyses on oppression (3/16)

A lot of grassroots healing programs/initiatives are terrible

I say this as a mental health professional who has done a lot of organizing/activism, and here's why🧵
1. They don't rely on practitioners in the field. Expertise doesn't have to be the center of support, but it should inform what people do. Healing is treated as some sort of creative venture as opposed to something with a standing body of work
2. Healing is approached anecdotally. It's cool that Reiki may have worked for you, but there should be balance between introducing alternative healing, and working with existing validated medical and
mental health practices
