(2/10) Previous studies show that giving large cash transfers to people in poverty can help them boost their income & quality of life. IDinsight partnered w/@GiveDirectly to evaluate the impact of their cash transfer program in Uganda’s Kiryandongo refugee settlement.
(3/10) This #WorldRefugeeDay we share early findings from our impact evaluation of @GiveDirectly’s one-off unconditional cash transfer (UCT) program. IDinsight’s eval combined an RCT of 1,090 refugee households & a longitudinal qual study of 21 households.
(4/10) @GiveDirectly and @IDinsight used a public lottery system to ensure transparent distribution of cash. 10,000 Sudanese refugee households were randomly assigned 1 of 24 cohorts. Each month households of 1 cohort received a UCT of $1000. bit.ly/3b7YoCq 
(5/10) What did we find?
~Two years after receiving UCTs, refugees who received cash transfers reported improved living conditions compared to those households that did not receive the cash transfers.

(6/10) Consumption in households increased by 11% ($32) each month, which is roughly the same amount as an avg families monthly expenditure on education.
(7/10) With a 61% ($1386) increase in assets, we found that households made home improvements, such as installing metal roofs or adding rooms.
(8/10) More households started businesses, and now earn 64% ($14) more business revenue because of the unconditional cash transfer.
