1. Spent all yesterday at the Radisson Hotel Toronto east near Victoria Park and Consumers, which is helping house 577 #refugee claimants. The place has been the site of harassment as of late, including an act of arson. #Toronto
2. Most attention as been focused on the arson attempt last Tues, which occurred right after fringe mayoral candidate Faith Goldy held a press conference outside of the hotel. The police have since released a photo/description of the suspect.
3. The individual in question is a woman, about 5'6"-5'8". She entered the hotel at about 1030pm last Tues. She allegedly had a gas canister. A rag was then stuck in the nozzle, lit. This set off the alarm and an alert worker tracked down the can and kicked it into the stairwell.
As a historian specializing in the #Holocaust, #Nazi Germany, and #Europe in the era of the world wars, I have been repeatedly asked about the degree to which the current situation in the United States resembles the interwar period and the rise of #fascism in Europe.
I would note several troubling similarities and one important but equally troubling difference.
In the 1920s, the US pursued #isolationism in foreign #policy and rejected participation in international organizations like the League of Nations.
1/ What I saw in #Lesvos today was truly shocking. As another winter approaches, the situation for thousands of #refugees trapped in a dangerous and desperate limbo on the island is totally unsustainable
2/ Conditions in #Moria camp are appalling - a stain on the conscience of Europe. Almost 7,500 people are jammed into a camp with an official capacity of 3,100. There is a lack of sanitation, insufficient clean drinking water, streams of raw sewage and infestations of mice & rats
3/ Fatime, a woman who fled Afghanistan, told me that she does not feel safe in #Moria camp. “We spend twelve hours queuing for food. We came here to find protection and send our children to school. We didn’t come here to live in a jungle,” she said
This should grieve us. It is a historic low for the US. We must hope that the ceiling of 30k could be reached, though doubtful w/this POTUS. Through this weekend just under 22,000 #refugees had arrived in US(only 2 weeks remain in 2018 fiscal year) apnews.com/db40014c014b45…
Christians, this # is pathetic, while a call to resettle #refugees isn't biblically commanded a call to rescue & serve them is. A Lifeway survey shows only 12% of evangelicals' views on immigrants & refugees are shaped by scripture. Read this & change that bit.ly/BiblicalMandate
Proverbs 24:11-12, “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. If you say, ‘Behold, we did not know this,’ does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it,...... #Refugees
Anyone who missed the piece earlier on @BBCr4today about #refugees on #lesbos please know there are many thousands of people crammed in appalling conditions into a camp intended for 2000, violence, little sanitation, NGOs reporting conditions to authorities but nothing changes.
One in four of the population of Lebanon is a Syrian #refugee. They are not in camps but living in limbo. 6 million people inside #Syria are Internally Displaced People (IDPs), forced to flee because of the conflict. 6 million more Syrians are refugees outside Syria
The least noted #refugee crisis is the flow of more than 1 million people OUT of #Venezuela, many of whom have had no real medical care for years amid collapse of V's govt syst. Unvaccinated, they are spreading #measles where they go. Example: Colombia: rcnradio.com/salud/casos-de…
Went to Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan today. Official population at 53,967, according to @UNHCR as of February 2018. All Syrian #refugees.
In many ways it was not what I expected.
First thing you notice is how remote the location is — some 100 kms east of Amman; 20 kms from Azraq town; 75 kms to Saudi Arabia; 255 kms to Iraq; and 90 kms to the Syrian border — from which its inhabitants fled.
At the same time, the harshness of the setting — a hardscrabble, sprawling 15 square km patch, scratched, etched and stretched out of endless rolling desert.
The perimeter was equally formidable, with security fencing, official patrols, check points and razor wire.
The UNHCR are offering shelter to refugees across the world. Most of those crisis are forgotten emergencies. 236,000 Congolese refugees have fled in Uganda so far. With @Refugees I visited a settlement there, got to meet some of them, and they all had stories to tell. #refugee
Sammy : now blind after he has been persecuted and tortured in Congo. Now lives in a small house in Rwamwanja (the refugee settlement) with his wife. Speaks with a soft voice. Told me he likes to take walks at dusk, because there's less stridence.
Ashaka : young, promising dancer. He told me that there's a sense of violent interruption when you have to flee - your life's suddenly shattered, and then all you can do is wait. He often meets with other teenagers at Rwamwanja's Youth Center for music workshops.
