🧵 The election in #Colombia of Gustavo Petro, a Marxist & ally of narco-terrorists, is alarming. Dictatorships in #Havana #Caracas #Managua #Moscow are already celebrating. The spread of totalitarian socialism is a grave threat to US national security & LATAM stability. (1)

We should all pray for the Colombian people. Socialism brings suffering, death & destruction. More than 100M died globally as victims of socialist systems. Already, fear of violence & instability are driving people & capital to flee #Colombia. (2)

Colombia has long been key US ally & beacon of democracy in LATAM. In fact, earlier this year, US designated Colombia as Major Non-NATO Ally.

A socialist govt will bring dire consequences for Colombia, US & entire region. Crime, terrorism & drug trafficking will skyrocket. (3)

I join other civil society leaders in condemning the destabilizing actions in our hemisphere by the Foro de São Paulo & the Grupo de Puebla, as well as the destructive interference of the Cuban dictatorship in neighboring countries. (4)

Last week, reports identified Raul Montes Garcia, a spy and Colonel for Cuba’s secret police, as director of transnational efforts to interfere in Colombia’s election in Petro’s favor. (5)

Sadly, US negligence & current admin’s actions helped to set stage for a socialist President in Colombia: removing FARC from terrorist list, weakening sanctions on LATAM dictatorships, a broken @StateDept & lack of vision or plan for US collaboration with LATAM. (6)

To overcome growing pink tide in LATAM, US must isolate Foro de São Paulo & must also offer positive vision to its neighbors— for joint econ dev, investment & job creation by deepening supply chains in our hemisphere. @OAS_official @SummitAmericas was a wasted opportunity. (FIN)
