“Bitch” and “cunt” are not the worst things you could call a woman. Selfish is. Knowing what you want and taking it is filed under “selfish” in patriarchy’s dictionary. And by the time we meet Nancy, she is a woman determined, finally, to be selfish. #GoodLucktoYouLeoGrande
I cried as my selfishness met hers, as I recognized the heady terror of being done, finally, with obeying. I wrote about @LeoGrandeFilm feministgiant.com/p/the-fuck-it-… #GoodLucktoYouLeoGrande
In one of their earliest scenes together, Leo asks Nancy “Why won’t you take what you want when it’s right here within reach?” He is what she wants. He is right there. Yet she wants to cancel the whole thing several times.

She was never allowed to want. #GoodLucktoYouLeoGrande
#GoodLucktoYouLeoGrande belongs to a few recent films that not only center women in their 50s and 60s, but gives them options and desire in ways mainstream films rarely do. feministgiant.com/p/the-fuck-it-…
Recently widowed Nancy has never had an orgasm. She faked them in her passionless 3-decade marriage She hires the eponymous Leo Grande, a much younger male sex worker, to help her go through a list of the kind of sex she never had with her husband–a “fuck-it list,” as he calls it
How often do films center a woman in her early 60s?
Rarer still is the film that centres a woman in her early 60s who wants to fuck.

Heteronormative patriarchy’s designated shelf life for cis women is age at which we cease to be its walking incubators feministgiant.com/p/the-fuck-it-…

There is liberation in speaking our desire. It will leave you feeling faint and nauseous when done suddenly, akin to losing one’s breath at higher elevations before the body has acclimated. We are called selfish because patriarchy understands the dangers of such liberation.
Once acclimated though, there’s no knowing what rebellion is instigated as you develop greater lung capacity, as you fuck the guilt out of your system. feministgiant.com/p/the-fuck-it-… #GoodLucktoYouLeoGrande
And @LeoGrandeFilm is among recent films that center older women and their desire as well as options.

As we watch these women get a taste of options–the What If’s–available to them, we understand why women are denied a three-dimensional life, why their imagination is flattened out of daring to want any more than what they have. Because we would want more, we would want different.
We would want more, we would want different, we would want a multi-dimensional life and enough freedom to determine who - in this Universe of ourselves - we want to be. feministgiant.com/p/the-fuck-it-… #GoodLucktoYouLeoGrande

I watched Good Luck To You, Leo Grande three times and wrote about desire. #GoodLucktoYouLeoGrande
In @LeoGrandeFilm, Nancy Stokes (Emma Thompson) snatches desire from the jaws of ageism.

I snatched desire from the jaws of shame.

Films that center older women are important. They show us women with options--and desire feministgiant.com/p/the-fuck-it-… #GoodLucktoYouLeoGrande
Films also like #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce, where get a taste of options–the What If’s–available to her alter egos in other universes. feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me…

Eric Greitens tied up and blindfolded a woman and took a picture of her partially nude without her consent and forced her to perform oral sex on him. We are sick and tired of sexual predators and misogynist fascist fucks like 👇🏽
And remember: white evangelicals supported this sexual predator "Some evangelical leaders, who supported him in 2016 along w/ an overwhelming number of the state’s white evangelical voters, said they had maintained their support for the governor"

White evangelicals have a long track record of misogyny 👇🏽

I've watched it three times already. It went places I was not expecting. Essay coming soon...
As I've said, I am 54yo and I can barely watch films or TV shows these days because they are about either high school students or people who are 31 years old.

Which is one of the reasons I love #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce which is now streaming

I'm writing about pleasure & desire, what we're allowed to want, what we're allowed to "take," how to free ourselves from shame. And Good Luck to You, Leo Grande jumps into that fray. Until my essay read an excerpt from my essay in #ThisArabIsQueer feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-de…

On Thursday: my flight from Montreal to Atlanta was. cancelled and rebooked for Friday. It was among approx 6,000 cancelled or delayed flights into/out of the U.S.

On Friday: my rebooked flight was cancelled again. It was among the approx 3,300 cancelled flights into/out of U.S.
Send calm and relaxation...
Three weeks ago, I almost missed my flight out of Dublin because of long lines at the airport.

This past Wednesday, I went to the airport in Amsterdam about 4 hours before departure time so that I don't miss my flight.

In many non-Western countries, speaking about such things as desire is scorned as “white” or “Western” behavior. I’ve been accused of being “obsessed” with sex because I insist on talking openly about desire. feministgiant.com/p/essay-my-des…
Being able to speak of our desire - without fear, without penalty, and on the way of being ourselves - is at the heart of being free. So I’m thrilled that wonderful book exists 👇🏽
To desire and to be desired is political. How we fuck and who we fuck is political. Always the goal: to be free. And so I’m thrilled that this book exists and honoured I’m among its contributors #ThisArabIsQueer
