I’ve built my current site traffic in 7 months without ever going out of my way to build backlinks. 🔗

BUT, in response to the May core update and as part of my ‘kitchen sink’ strategy, I’m having a go. 🫡

These are the EXACT link building strategies I’m using.

🧵👇 #SEO #blog
First, it’s worth noting that my site has picked up over 400 backlinks organically to date.

The problem is, none of these links are coming from high authority sites in highly relevant niches. 👊🏼

As a result these links pass hardly any juice and my DA is a 0.4!
To change this I’m deploying the following 3 link building tactics:

🟢 Reclaiming image attribution
🟢 Help a Reporter Out (HARO)
🟢 Original research link-bait

Let’s dive into each of these strategies in more detail…
1️⃣ Reclaiming image attribution 📸

This one may be my favorite of the three. 😏

You spend a fair amount of time making HIGH QUALITY infographics…

…such high quality that your competitors and other sites are stealing them. 🥷
So, what can you do? 🤷‍♂️

By using the ‘reclaiming image attribution’ strategy, you can:

🟢 Discover sites who have used your images
🟢 Determine whether they have provided proper attribution
🟢 Request attribution via a backlink to your site
This overall process is fairly simple.

First, I make a note of each post that has high quality, original images/infographics. 📝

I then prioritize these by highest traffic volume over the past 3 months (a great image on a post with no traffic is less likely to be stolen). 📈
Next, I copy the image address in question and search Google with an image instead of text.

You can do this by first going to Google images tab and clicking the little camera icon that is just to the right of the search field…
From here Google will populate two key results:

🟢 Pages that include matching images
🟢 Visually similar images

For the direct pages that include your image, click through each them and determine if they have provided attribution within the post.
The visually similar images is where things get interesting…

Google uses its mega brain to surface optically analogous images.

Here you will find the folks who took your image and slapped their watermark on it (like my recent run-in 🤣) or edited the image in small ways.
The final step is to contact each of the site owners and ask for an attribution backlink.

If you want results, I would strongly recommend you take a friendly approach. ☀️

YES they took your image, BUT no one wants to collaborate with a jerk so I kill them with kindness.
2️⃣ Help a Reporter Out (HARO) 📑

HARO has been mentioned by everyone in the SEO world forever it seems.

I won’t go into great detail here other than to say that my approach is to narrow the HARO daily updates down to just my EXACT niche.
I also don’t take a spray and pray approach.

Meaning if a reporter states they are looking for an expert in “X” but I’m an expert in “Y” which is kinda sorta related to X…

I just don’t reply. It’s a waste of my time and the reporters.

Target topics you can easily win. 🏆
3️⃣ Original research link-bait 👨‍🔬

So much of niche content creation is aggregating fragmented information that already exists on the internet.

It is rare for site owners to produce unique, one-of-a-kind data.

Be rare.
My goal here is to create at least two new posts with original research and data that will serve as link-bait.

The reality is we are all inherently lazy and it’s a heck of a lot easier to pull data that took someone else days to generate than to reproduce that data on our own.
Identifying the topics for these types of posts can be difficult.

BUT even if the search volume is extremely low, these types of posts are worth their weight in gold. 👑
That’s it! 🤝

I’ll plan to report back in a few months time to let you know what’s working and what isn’t.

What link building strategies do you use?

Which ones are the most successful?

You spend hours researching 🔬 and writing ✍️ your posts.

SO, why don’t you spend even a minute on your TITLE TAG?

It will be the first thing searchers see, and it can have a HUGE impact on CTR. 🎯

Here’s EXACTLY how I approach Title Tags.

🧵👇 #SEO #blog
To set the stage, your Title Tag dictates the DISPLAY title that will be seen in Google SERPs.

An effective Title Tag can lead to a higher CTR, which in turn can lead to higher RANKINGS. 📈

…once you get to page 1, it can help you eventually secure that #1 spot. 🥇
And YES, Google REWRITES your Title Tags up to 60% of the time…

…BUT, when Google does rewrite the Title Tag, it uses your H1 header ~50% of the time INSTEAD.

My Title Tags and H1s are always the same (WordPress themes mostly do this by default).

We’ve talked about how to establish topical authority by targeting specific content verticals.

But, exactly how do you DISCOVER the LONG TAIL KEYWORDS to fill these content verticals up? 🧐

Here’s my FAVORITE long tail keyword research technique using @semrush.

🧵👇#SEO #blog
To set the stage, our mechanically inclined niche site builder chose a broad domain name to allow her room to grow:

“GearheadAuthority(dot)com” 💪

She’s also identified 5 main topic clusters to initially pursue:

🟢 Jet skis
🟢 Boats
🟢 ATVs
🟢 Motorcycles
🟢 Snowmobiles
The next step is to uncover about 10 long tail keywords per topic to write her first 50 posts on.

I like to start with one content vertical, publish ALL 10 posts with thoughtful internal links, 🔗 and then move on to the next vertical.

In just over 6 months, I’ve published 120 long-form informational posts, and surpassed 38,000 pageviews/mo. 🚀

I’ve been able to achieve this, with a demanding full-time job, due in large part to a single strategy…

BRAND SWAPPING. 🔄

🧵👇 #SEO #blog
@NicheDown detailed this process on his recent @nichepursuits podcast.

I’m going to keep beating the hell out of this drum, because I think it’s a game changer for niche site content creators. 🤝

It’s allowed me to scale at a nice pace, WITHOUT the need to outsource.
Brand Swapping is as simple as it sounds.

Take @nichedown’s example:

“Yamaha dirt bike won’t start”.

After writing the HIGHEST QUALITY piece of content you can, you then swap out ‘Yamaha’ with other leading dirt bike brand names. 🏍

Establishing TOPICAL AUTHORITY doesn’t happen by accident. 📣

You should be INTENTIONAL about how you attack content clusters.

I achieve this with the help of 2 primary documents:

1️⃣ Content strategy plan
2️⃣ Keyword ‘hit-list’

Here’s my EXACT process.

🧵👇 #SEO #blog
First, some important points. 👊🏼

🟢 These are LIVING documents.

They are constantly changing and evolving.

🟢 My content strategy plan informs my keyword hit-list…

…AND my keyword hit-list informs my content strategy. 🔄
1️⃣ Content strategy plan. ♟

Just hearing the words ‘content strategy plan’ will immediately put some folks off.

But, this is NOT something you need to over-engineer.

You can keep it SIMPLE!

I think of my plan as the 30,000 foot view of the ARCHITECTURE of my site.

Today my niche site is exactly 6 months old and just surpassed 33,000 pageviews/month. 📈

All this time, I’ve been learning and iterating on how to write the best INFORMATIONAL POST 📝 possible.

Here’s 6 MONTHS of learning, distilled down to 10 MINUTES. ⏳

The CONCLUSION section of informational posts 📝 often gets rushed and overlooked.

I try to ensure my concluding statements are SURPRISINGLY HELPFUL 🤝 to my readers and help enhance my ON-PAGE SEO.

Here are the key elements I like to include.

🧵👇#SEO #blog
1. Topic sentence(s) opening. ✏️

Immediately following the H2 ‘Conclusion’ header, I like to open with a topic sentence that restates the issue I am addressing, using the EXACT target key phrase.

Sticking with the “Volkswagen Jetta won’t start” keyword example…
I might open with something really straight forward like:

“If your Volkswagen Jetta won’t start, don’t panic! There are a number of prover troubleshooting steps you can try.”

That’s it. Nothing fancy. Straight to the point.
