News from #CHOGM2022: Following my working sessions and meetings with leaders, we’re announcing support to improve people’s lives around the world. This includes funding for education and international scholarships – to give more opportunities to more people.
We’re also providing funding for initiatives that will support gender equality in Commonwealth countries. This includes support for sexual and reproductive health and rights in Nigeria, as well as for research projects that will improve health systems and pandemic preparedness.
On top of that, we’re investing in different initiatives to expand access to information and to promote nature-based solutions for fighting climate change. This investment will also help with different projects that support peace and security throughout the African continent.
This is in addition to the funding we announced for key humanitarian food and nutrition partners – to help address the global food security crisis, to support some of the world’s most vulnerable people, and to create stability that benefits Canadians.
Bottom line: We’re stepping up to support people across the Commonwealth and address the issues affecting Canadians. Learn more about what we announced at #CHOGM2022 and what we’re focusing on moving forward: pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-r…

Update: Vaccination requirements for domestic and outbound travel on planes and trains, federally-regulated transportation sectors, and federal government employees will be suspended as of Monday, June 20th.
Masking will continue to be enforced on planes and trains. And current border measures – including vaccination requirements for most foreign nationals entering Canada, and quarantine and testing requirements for Canadians who are not fully vaccinated – will remain in effect.
These steps are being taken because 32 million Canadians have been vaccinated against COVID-19 – that’s nearly 90% of the eligible population – and because case counts, hospitalization rates, and death rates have been decreasing across the country.

We also announced that Canada is co-sponsoring Chile’s initiative to protect the Pacific Ocean – underscoring our commitment to keeping our oceans and coasts clean and healthy. We spoke about pollution pricing, too, and agreed to promote its adoption around the world.

One Canadian killed by gun violence is one too many. That’s why we’ve banned 1,500 types of military-style assault firearms. And that’s why, today, we’ve introduced legislation to further strengthen gun control in Canada. Thread ⤵️
Through this legislation, we’ll move forward with a national freeze on handgun ownership. In other words, it will no longer be possible to buy, sell, transfer, or import handguns anywhere in Canada once this Bill becomes law.
We’ll also increase criminal penalties to combat gun smuggling and trafficking, provide authorities with more tools to investigate firearms crimes, and criminalize the modification of magazines to prevent them from holding more than the legal limit of ammunition.
