TODAY IN GERMANY: @POTUS Biden meets with German @Bundeskanzler ahead of the formal launch of the #G7. Aides say the two leaders are set to discuss Russia and Ukraine and “continued close coordination on the political and diplomatic front.”
Also on the Biden-Scholtz agenda: security assistance, financial support, sanctions on Russia, transatlantic security issues, Climate change, energy, senior administration officials say.
Later, aides say the opening session of the #G7 is set to focus on the global economy and discussing “core problems that are top of mind” like energy security, food insecurity due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Notably, when discussing the “core problems” facing the global economy, aides who briefed reporters never explicitly used the word “inflation” but instead made reference to “headwinds” facing economies.
The summit is also set to focus on @POTUS Biden’s call for the #G7 to launch a global infrastructure program to counter China’s Belt and Road Initiative. No details yet on the size, scope and focus of that, but more is expected later today.
And there will be more detail today on plans for the U.S. and at least some #G7 countries to ban the export of Russian gold, a move further designed to isolate the Putin-led economy.
More details in this tweet as @POTUS Biden confirms plans for G7 nations to ban Russian gold imports:
NEW FROM @CBSNewsPoll: Most Americans disapprove of the Supreme Court’s decision overturning of Roe v. Wade, including two-thirds of women who disapprove.
By more than a 20-point margin, Americans call it a step backward rather than forward for America.
Those who approve — and in particular the three-fourths of conservatives who do — say they feel both hopeful and happy, according to @CBSNewsPoll.
Before leaving the USA for European summits, @POTUS Biden is signing the bipartisan gun control/mental health bill passed Friday. But he says he’ll host an event July 11 to celebrate passage of the legislation.
Before signing the bill, he recapped the last 30 years of attempts to pass new gun control measures and remembered the victims and families of those killed in recent mass shootings.
“God willing this is going to save lots of lives,” @POTUS Biden said as he finished signing the legislation.
“The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.” supremecourt.gov/opinions/21pdf…
Opinion polls don’t sway Supreme Court Justices but just last month, @CBSNewsPoll found two-thirds of Americans said they wanted Roe v. Wade kept in place.
With an overturn of Roe, the matter will be left up to the states. Most Americans have said they want abortion to be legal in their state in all or most cases.
ALSO NEW FROM @CBSNewsPoll: Many Americans do say the job market is good and that jobs have increased over the last year – but it’s still inflation driving their views when they rate the economy. cbsnews.com/news/cbs-news-…
And among those who say the economy is and, the @CBSNewsPoll finds inflation and gas prices are a big reason why. But notice 50% say the economy is bad because they “Don’t trust Biden administration.”
NEW: @POTUS Biden’s overall job approval is 42%, down one point from last month; it's been hovering in the low 40s for months now, and that tick down does mark its lowest point yet. He is underwater on his handling of crime, immigration, economy and inflation.
PHOTO: @POTUS Biden, @SecBlinken@SecDef@JakeSullivan46 and other U.S. officials meet with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov in Warsaw, Poland.
The last time Biden met with Minister Kuleba was Feb. 22 at the White House.
They discussed far more serious issues, but the brief bit of small talk we heard was about sleep: Kuleba told Biden he’s learned to sleep anywhere, including on the train he took to Warsaw. @POTUS said he learned to sleep on @Amtrak when he was commuting as a senator.
