There are still a few days left to celebrate. Happy #PrideMonth to everyone living their authentic lives and to all those trying to do so in a virulently homophobic and transphobic time. Sending you strength, solidarity and

Here's a thread of stories of mine that provide powerful #PrideMonth reading. I hope you will read and RT this thread and the stories therein. TYVM

LGBTQ lives are under threat from GOP legislation and assaults. I wrote about it here:

I interviewed Linda Villarosa about her new book about racism and American healthcare. It's a powerful interview and she is a crucial thinker and writer on this vital aspect of deconstructing white supremacy.

Award-winning mystery writer Greg Herren's two latest books are YA, but will resonate just as strongly for adults. In my interview, Herren details how Bury Me in Shadows takes on the complicated lineage of one family's Civil War history. So timely.

Patricia Highsmith is best known for her classic crime fiction, like the Ripley books and Strangers on a Train. But she was also a lesbian who kept decades of compelling diaries that span a transformative era. I wrote about her and the diaries here.

Leslie Cohen died suddenly last month. Cohen was charming, funny and a dedicated activist. I interviewed her about her memoir Audacity of a Kiss, about being memorialized in a statue near the Stonewall Inn and her iconic lesbian club in NYC, Sahara.

Debbie Millman is a designer, a thinker, a keen interviewer, and half of a daunting queer power couple with writer Roxane Gay. I loved interviewing her about her latest book and it shows.

Keith Boykin was a Black gay man in the Clinton White House advising the POTUS. In his latest book, Race Against Time, he writes about the impact the "darkening of America" has had on white supremacy, about Trayvon Martin and more. My interview here:

Sarah Schulman has been writing award-winning novels for years, as well as non-fiction & plays. Let the Record Show, her astute chronicle of AIDS activism and ACT UP NYC, is a hefty tome and riveting history. I wrote about the book and Schulman here.

Janis Ian was an iconic folk singer in the 1960s and 70s. Her latest album is a pastiche of folk ballads, swoony jazz and protest songs we need now. She talked to me about her music, activism and her storied career as a singer/songwriter.

How on earth did this piece pass any kind of editorial scrutinyl? And the thread promoting the story turns the boys into victims. Nevermind that this began when a boy sent out nude pics of a minor girl without her consent, which is deemed a "mistake." Wow.
This story SHOULD have been about how teenage boys are coddled and protected when they do bad things to teenage girls and that teenage girls are pleading for help and getting none. Instead this is about how when girls hold boys accountable, adults attack them. Horrible framing.
And how on earth did this pass editorial scrutiny? Just say "she was hot, so he sent her pics around to everyone, but why'd she get all upset and stuff over it?" Gaslighting 101.

I'm angry every single hour of every day about how very sick The Wife is,how aggressive this cancer is and how utterly broken our healthcare system is in America. And I know how to fight and demand answers and do research and confront bureaucracy. What about folks who can't?
🧵1/
When I was paralyzed I had to fight not only for myself, but for all the patients on my floor. The hospital was sending sick homeless people back out on the street which I knew because all the intercoms were linked due to nursing shortage. People we'e sobbing. It was awful.
🧵2/
I called the head of the hospital and filed an official complaint. I had all the bureaucrats in my room trying to gaslight me. Then one of the intercoms from another patient opened into my room. Everything changed. They got scared. "Streeting" is supposed to be a secret.

Read this against my own better judgement,to respond fairly. I urge others to use their 3 free Atlantic stories to read literally anything else. Mike Pence propelled Trumpism forward at every conceivable turn&on Jan6 had to be convinced by Dan Quayle to support the Constitution.
The assertion that Mike Pence is heroic for doing the most bare bones aspect of his actual job--and a ceremonial one at that--is political propaganda of the worst sort from a phalanx of Never Trumper GOP who want their old terrible party back.
🧵2/
This is an embarrassing plea, particularly when juxtaposed against the revelation that Betsy DeVos resigned in disgust over Pence's refusal to invoke the 25th Amendment. Pence has never spoken out against Trump, who said he should have been killed in the insurrection.

Obesity is actually a frequent indicator of poverty. Instead of smiling at the perils of poverty and life lived in food deserts where people are forced to eat food from Dollar Stores, maybe educate yourself about this and also don't be a _____.
Apparently it was something I said. Some people would always rather block the person educating them than be educated.
Imagine being so entitled that you body shame poor people and think it's cool. And note that these folks never ever have a photo of themselves in their profile. Huh.

I should be sleeping, but I am too upset. Around 11:30, hospital admissions called asking when The Wife was coming in. I had been calling admissions since 9:30am to find out when a bed would be available. The last time I called was about 5:30pm.
1/🧵
At 5:30,I had just spent an hour trying to determine if the surgery was going to be covered by her insurance because the hospital finance office had called and left a message suggesting it was not. They promised to get an answer to me after 3 calls & call back. They didn't.
2/🧵
I called admissions then to try and get info on that and they told me there would likely be a bed available around 7, available till 8. I asked about the coverage and was told to call admissions. Which I did, but just got voicemail. It was now about 6pm.

Wednesday: deadlines for three stories; Verizon shut off phone and internet services for non-payment; 11 phone calls--once I got service restored thanks to my emergency burner phone--to doctors and other services related to The Wife's care. Crying jag for an hour. So worn down.
There is so much involved in trying to save someone's life. No one tells you how hard the process will be. And so much is whimsical, determined simply by getting the right--or wrong--person on the phone. It should be easier. This is the worst time in someone's life.
1.6M Americans get cancer each year. 600k die. According to the CDC,cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in the US. Yet we almost never talk about it. Or the many layers to care and treatment. Or how many people--hard to know how many--don't even know how to access treatment.
