Mohd Zubair has often been shy of wearing the tag of a journalist, and yet on many days of the past year, his work has shaped the very news cycle. How did he go from running a parody account to becoming a news institution in himself? I profile Zubair here.
thequint.com/news/india/who…
Speaking to @TheQuint, Magsaysay Awardee @ravishndtv said Zubair has been doing "what should have been the mainstream media's job", "at great personal risk".
“Those in power are thriving due to fake news...To fact-check their lies means facing cases"
thequint.com/news/india/who…
Zubair's twitter became the source of every report on the Haridwar Dharam Sansad. "He could have written a story with his by-line, as an exclusive investigation. But he tweeted it all out for all journalists to use as an open source," said @alishan_jafri
thequint.com/news/india/who…
It is Zubair’s Dharam Sansad reporting that led to the arrest of some of the seers who spoke at the event. It is then no surprise that one of them, Anand Swaroop, is celebrating Zubair’s arrest. “Now he must have understood the outcome of sending saints behind bars on fake cases”
But none of the hate Zubair had faced had a patch on what was to come, when he shared a clip of #NupurSharma on Times Now. His tweet got unprecedented attention, ultimately causing the BJP global embarrassment. Threats against him exacerbated manifold
thequint.com/news/india/who…
Zubair helped sift through scores of vile screenshots on social media after the #BulliBai deals needed to be submitted to the police. "He didn’t care for credit. He is one of those rare people who work selflessly to make this country better": @SidrahDP
thequint.com/news/india/who…
Despite the social media fame and immense following, Zubair "remains media-shy," said @NirjhariSinha
"Zubair would always be very reluctant to even appear in TV debates. He does not like grabbing limelight"

A popular school in Bangalore has sent a mail to all its alumni asking them to go to maps and change the name of Gyanvapi mosque to “Gyanvapi Temple”

“You are requested to do it and ask our Hindu brothers and sisters to do it till google updates changes”

I dug a little into other things the school (New Horizon Public School) has been up to. 2 months ago, they organised tickets for its students and staff for movie The Kashmir Files. The school made it *mandatory* for all the staff members to attend the movie screening. 2/n
Back in August 2020, on the day of the bhoomi poojan ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, the school had organised a bhoomi poojan *in the school premises*. All alumni and students were invited for it. 3/n

Final phase of voting in Uttar Pradesh today. Sharing a🧵of my reports. First, a special series we started on #EverydayCommunalism in UP. Detailed ground reports to establish how large-scale riots have been replaced by low-key but sustained acts of communal violence and hate.
How BJP Youth Morcha office bearers used the death of a Hindu woman in Agra as a pretext to attack Muslims and damage their shops

I went back to Kasganj, to revisit how a minor altercation over a Republic Day celebration here turned into a city-wide riot. Local cadre or small players are used as the primary vehicle to dispense this violence, often leaving them reduced to mere pawns.

Remember the 'Covid Jihad' propaganda run by mainstream media? Muslims in UP suffered hugely as a result. From pregnant Muslim women denied hospital entry, to Muslim-run businesses taking a hit as they're viewed with suspicion.
#EverydayCommunalism report
Fauzia, a weaver in Varanasi, was forced to deliver outside BHU hospital, as they wouldn't admit her, accusing her of "bringing Covid". Finally, when the nurse agreed to do her stitches, the taunts continued: "why do you people keep having babies"

On Ahmad's first day out after lockdown, a group yelled at him: "Miyan, where are you going about spitting and spreading Covid?"

“After that, it became difficult to even stand at a non-Muslim shop worried about the kind of taunts that could come my way"

Today is my last day @ThePrintIndia. I spent 3.5 years here, covering politics, people, society and human rights. From the anti-CAA movement to the Delhi carnage, from multiple state elections to the tragic Covid-19 waves, I learnt essential ground reporting here.
Sharing some of my work here. My first major assignment here was co-leading a flagship project 'My543' in the run up to the 2019 elections— a 360degree analysis of India's 543 electoral constituencies and the work done by its MPs.

I also started a video series called #PoliTicker-- where I gave a summary+analysis of the most interesting political event of the day in under 1 minute.

Reporting from Agra: Amit Jaiswal was an RSS worker followed by PM Modi on twitter. The huge poster of Modi that had adorned the back of his car for many years is now gone. His sister tore it off the day Amit died of Covid after their pleas went unheard. theprint.in/india/rss-work…
"Amit ne poori zindagi PM modi ke liye nikal di. Modi ne uske liye kya kiya? Aise PM sahab ki humein kya zaroorat? Humne poster phaadh ke nikaal diya (Amit spent his entire life fighting for PM Modi. What did Modi do for him? We tore off his poster)"- Amit's family.
"If someone said anything remotely critical of about Modi-Yogi, he would threaten to beat them up"

Just months ago, Amit had also gone to Ayodhya to put free LED posters of 'Ram Janmabhoomi'.
